Exploitation of Rabbits at the Dawn of the Holocene: Evidence From the Font Voltada Site (Northeastern Iberia) Using Comparative Neotaphonomic Models
During the transition from the Pleistocene to the Holocene, hunter‐gatherer societies in the northeastern Iberian Peninsula increased the number of settlements and broadened their subsistence strategies. This period is marked by the appearance of terrestrial snail accumulations attributable to human harvesting, the expansion of specialized Spanish ibex hunting in mountainous areas and a notable intensification in the exploitation of small prey. A…
Health and Disease Among Medieval Urban Animals: The Case Study of Barcelona
During the lifespan of domestic animals, specific pathologies may arise in relation to their intended use. With the aim of increasing knowledge about the uses of animals in past urban contexts, a number of archeozoological studies conducted on faunal samples from medieval and post-medieval sites in Barcelona (north-eastern Iberia) have been reviewed and the pathological cases analyzed. The results show that the most frequent pathologies among lar…
Unravelling the role of Atlantic fish in medieval and early modern Western Mediterranean foodways
The development of the Atlantic fish trade marked a major shift in European diets during the Medieval and modern periods. Although this trade is well documented in historical and archaeological records, its impact on consumption patterns remains poorly understood, particularly in the western Mediterranean, where ichthyoarchaeological studies are limited. This study reconstructs the trade and consumption of two key Atlantic species (European hake …
The oldest mule in the western Mediterranean. The case of the Early Iron Age in Hort d’en Grimau (Penedès, Barcelona, Spain)
Genetic and radiocarbon analyses confirm the Hort d'en Grimau mule as the oldest hybrid in the western Mediterranean and continental Europe. • Dated between the mid-8th and mid-6th century BCE. • The mule skeleton was found in a silo alongside the skeletal remains of a woman. This indicates a close relationship between equines and humans. • Pathological bone alterations and isotopic results suggest that the animal may have been used for riding an…
Nostra Senyora dels Àngels d’Avinganya (Seròs, NE Iberia). Zooarchaeology studies in a rural monastery (16th-19th centuries)
The monastery of Avinganya (Seròs, Lleida, north-eastern Iberia) was founded at the beginning of the 13th century (1201) and was occupied by the Trinitarian Order. Initially it operated as a male community although it subsequently became a nunnery (1251), reverting to being a friary (1529) until its final demise and abandonment in 1835. In addition, in its early stages, it was a burial space for some important figures of the Catalan-Aragonese nob…

Ecology of large ungulates in the northeastern Iberian Peninsula during the Upper Palaeolithic through stable isotopes and tooth wear analysis
The northeastern Iberian Peninsula acted as a refuge zone during the Late Pleistocene where the persistence of terrestrial ecosystems could provide hunter-gatherers with large prey, mainly horse (Equus ferus) and red deer (Cervus elaphus). Isotopic (δ13C, δ18O, δ15N) and dental wear (mesowear and microwear) analyses have been applied on the remains of both species from the archaeological sites of Arbreda and Bora Gran at Serinyà (Girona), where e…
