The Visitor
The following story-based on several years of fieldwork in a southern Appalachian city with an ugly Jim Crow past-is a fiction about place and identity. The city, despite its progressive reputation, remains deeply segregated. Its segregation is obscured, at least for some, by a veneer of gentrification and Black Lives Matter yard signs. When bodies begin turning up in unexpected places, the White narrator, a retired folklorist, uses French Struct…
The Honey Gatherer
The story, of course, is about a honey gatherer. But it's also about the uncertainties and ambiguities of fieldwork. I've often written about Gabra nomads, far to the north of where "The Honey Gatherer" takes place. Many years ago, before I went north, I lived and worked as a volunteer teacher near Bungoma, in western Kenya, where this story takes place. Those experiences turned me from my early career in journalism to anthropology. Throughout my…
The Anthropology of Bees
For the past six years I've been studying beekeepers in Buncombe County, North Carolina. My interest in beekeeping is part of a larger project on place and identity. "The Anthropology of Bees" grew out of my getting to know one of those beekeepers who had a progressive, ultimately fatal disease. The man in the story is not that man. Nevertheless, the story aims to give readers a sense of what it was like to be him. His interest in and care for be…

His views on the two leading political imperial issues ofthe 1880s and early 1900s—the schemes for imperial federation and imperial preference —are examined. Hobson discussed such topics with a substantial degree of balance and objectivity, chough he had strong personal feelings on the matters. Since historians of thou…
