Beyond the Tangible
Authenticity is an important aspect in natural history museums. Many museums aim to give their visitors an authentic experience. Now that increasingly more museums are digitizing their collection, the topic of digital authenticity has become relevant. To study how people interpret authenticity in a digital museum collection, we conducted 14 semi‐structured interviews with adults from the Netherlands about the digitized collection of a Dutch natur…
Science museum educators’ views on object-based learning
Museum educators play an important role in mediating visitors’ museum experiences. We investigated the perspectives of science museum educators on the role of touching authentic objects and replicas in visitors’ learning experiences during educational activities. We used a mixed-methods approach including surveys with 49 museum educators and interviews with 12 museum educators from several countries in Europe. Our findings indicate the importance…
Effects of a STEM-oriented lesson series aimed at inclusive and diverse education on primary school children’s perceptions of and sense of belonging in space science
The number of women and underrepresented individuals working in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) fields does not reflect the diversity of our societies. Even if children have an interest in STEM, they may not consider choosing a study or career in that direction if their perception is that they would not belong in science. This study examines the effects of a STEM lesson series aimed at inclusivity and diversity on children…
Reasoning about Objects in a Natural History Museum
In natural history museums, a large part of the educational mission is to facilitate family learning with and about objects. Questions on object labels can play a role in this learning process. In the current study, we investigated the effect that different types of questions on object labels can have on the reasoning conversations among family members. We audio-recorded family conversations at an exhibit that included a fossilized dinosaur egg a…
Citizen science on a smartphone
Citizen science provides researchers means to gather or analyse large datasets. At the same time, citizen science projects offer an opportunity for non-scientists to be part of and learn from the scientific process. In the Dutch iSPEX project, a large number of citizens turned their smartphones into actual measurement devices to measure aerosols. This study examined participants’ motivation and perceived learning impacts of this unique project. M…

This study compares the mission statements of a small sample of Christian elementary schools in the United States and the Netherlands. In the United States, Christian schools are private schools, while in the Netherlands Christian schools receive state funding, just like public schools. Content analysis of mission statements revealed similarities and differences in the number and type of religious as well as non-religious themes. Results showed t…
