Collective Violence
"Collective violence has played an important role throughout American history, though we have typically denied it. But it is not enough to repress violence or to suppress our knowledge of it. We must understand the phenomenon, and to do this, we must learn what violent groups are trying to say. Th at some choose violence tells us something about the perpetrators, inevitably, about ourselves and the society we have built."--Provided by publisher

Rape, race, and the death penalty in Georgia
Following the 1972 Supreme Court decision on capital punishment, the Georgia legislature enacted a death penalty statute that attempts to avoid constitutional objections by establishing discretionary death sentencing for 361 rape cases in Georgia, comparing legal and nonlegal variables. Results indicate that blacks convicted of raping whites were disproportionately sentenced to death

Race, Judicial Discretion, and the Death Penalty
The record of executions in the United States has long shown that black defendants are disproportionately subjected to this sanction. But racial differentials in the use of the death penalty may not alone reveal the existence of racial discrimination. The Supreme Court in the Furman decision ruled that the death penalty is unconstitutional because it is a "cruel and unusual" punishment. Some allusions to racial discrimination appeared in the opin…

On Collective Violence
Despite the ubiquity of violence in world history, and the efforts of scholars and national commissions to diag nose its causes and prescribe solutions, violence remains a major social problem in many parts of the world. Indeed, it is such in part because of these efforts, and because under standing and solutions are problematic. Papers in this issue are reviewed and the respective roles of and relations between national commissions and the schol…

The dominant, middle-class society morally denounces vio lence, perhaps partly because of a general principle which characterizes every established political p…
