Resilient grammars
In this work we consider some residual cases of OV order in Cimbrian and show that this is due to the interaction between verb movement, a language specific property, and the syntax of bare quantifiers. This has consequences on a general theory on the change of the basic word order, since it shows that the passage from OV to VO can involve different structures in different languages depending on other properties, hence it is not possible to trace…
Freie Relativsätze mit d-Pronomen
In the present-day Germanic languages, free relatives (FRs) share formal properties with indirect question in that both constructions are introduced by w-pronouns. However, at least in German (and historical stages of a larger set of languages, including English), there is an additional pattern which involves the use of d-pronouns such as German der/die/das 'that.masc./fem./ neut.', which typically introduce headed relative clauses. Focusing on p…
Phases and cycles. Some problems with Phase Theory
The purpose of this article is to review recent proposals in phase theory. The notion of phase has acquired a central position in recent minimalist thinking, with several core concepts of minimalism intimately linked or even derived from phases. Notions such as cyclicity, movement and Transfer, the way the syntactic system interacts with the sensory-motor and conceptual-intentional systems of the brain, all are directly linked to the phase. We sh…
Empirical evidence and theoretical reasoning in generative grammar
In his paper “Data in generative grammar: the stick and the carrot”, Sam Featherston offers an interesting plea for a change in linguistic methodology. He criticizes the “inadequate praxis” of the majority of generative linguists to use their own intuitive judgments as evidence for their syntactic hypotheses. He claims that with this bad scientific practice, which has not changed in the thirty years after Greenbaum's (1977) harsh criticism of “du…

Multiple Wh-Fronting
This article argues that overt multiple wh-fronting in languages like Bulgarian consists of moving a single wh-cluster to [Spec, CP]. The formation of wh-clusters is motivated by the assumption that wh-elements can act as landing sites for wh-movement due to morphological properties of wh-words. I further argue that languages such as Japanese constitute covert instances of this process of wh-cluster formation, accounting for intricate constraints…
