  • The Ghost and the Gimmick: Spirit Photography and the Commodification of Secularism

    Dana Luciano•ARTICLE•American Literature•2025

This article considers how spirit photography operates in the context of secularism. It begins by tracking controversies around two nineteenth-century spirit photographers, William J. Mumler and Edouard Buguet, examining photographs and written texts made with the purpose of mocking and debunking Spiritualism. Intended to amuse, these works pointed the finger at the real frauds and their dupes; they sold their audiences both the pleasures of illu…

  • How the Earth Feels: Geological Fantasy in the Nineteenth-Century United States

    Dana Luciano•BOOK•How the Earth Feels•2023

In How the Earth Feels Dana Luciano examines the impacts of the new science of geology on nineteenth-century US culture. Drawing on early geological writings, Indigenous and settler accounts of earthquakes, African American antislavery literature, and other works, Luciano reveals how geology catalyzed transformative conversations regarding the intersections between humans and the nonhuman world. She shows that understanding the earth's history ge…

  • Unsettled Ground: Indigenous Prophecy, Geological Fantasy, and the New Madrid Earthquakes

    Open Access•Dana Luciano•ARTICLE•American Quarterly•2022

This essay explores the differing relations to land, time, and history—human and planetary—that organized responses to the New Madrid Earthquakes of 1811–12 and that now characterize responses to the Anthropocene. Indigenous and settler accounts connected the earthquakes to a catastrophic rupture in time, but they located that catastrophe differently. For the US, the disaster was seismic, a geological revelation of human powerlessness. Federal in…

Belated Futures Stephanie Foote, Anthony Lioi, and Dana Luciano Last year, the Resilience collective—Stephanie Foote, Anthony Lioi, and Dana Luciano—asked a range of environmental humanists to speculate about the state of the field for this double issue marking the tenth anniversary of the journal’s publication. In part, we imagined this as a call-back to the journal’s first issue. Resilience 1.1 was entirely dedicated to a suite of manifestos ab…

Dana Luciano, Ivy Wilson•BOOK•Unsettled States Nineteenthcentury…•2020

"In Unsettled States, Dana Luciano and Ivy G. Wilson present some of the most exciting emergent scholarship in American literary and cultural studies of the "long" nineteenth century. Featuring eleven essays from senior scholars across the discipline, the book responds to recent critical challenges to the boundaries, both spatial and temporal, that have traditionally organized scholarship within the field. The volume considers these recent challe…

Queer Inhumanisms" from its outset sought to move away from the progressive-temporal and oppositional frames encoded in such terms as posthuman or anti-humanist, and thus also from its own ostensible novelty. Rather, its emphasis was on studying extant or nearby strands of what can be taken as queer inhumanist thought, the identification of which must not depend on either presentist or essentialist or otherwise narrow terms: this work has been th…

    Dana Luciano•ARTICLE•American Literature•2014•Cited by: 3•References: 14

This essay takes up the recent embrace of geology by contemporary postsecular critics in relation to a history of nonsecular uses of geology as a resource for what Michael Taussig terms the "unthought zones of materiality." It looks closely at one such manifestation: the nineteenth-century collaboration between the geologist and Spiritualist lecturer and writer William Denton and his wife, the psychometric medium Elizabeth Foote Denton, which pro…
