  • Prevalence of insufficient physical activity among adult residents of Tehran

Open Access•Shervin Mossavarali, Ali Vaezi et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2024

The identified associated factors serve as a valuable guide for policymakers in developing tailored intervention strategies to address the needs of high-risk populations, particularly among older adults and females

  • Epidemiology and prevalence of tobacco use in Tehran; a report from the recruitment phase of Tehran cohort study

Open Access•Akbar Shafiee, Alireza Oraii et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2023

The concerning prevalence of tobacco use in Tehran and its large gender gap for cigarette and waterpipe use warrant tailored preventive policies

  • Global, regional, and national age-sex-specific mortality and life expectancy, 1950–2017

Open Access•Daniel Dicker, Grant Nguyen et al.•ARTICLE•The Lancet•2018

BACKGROUND: Assessments of age-specific mortality and life expectancy have been done by the UN Population Division, Department of Economics and Social Affairs (UNPOP), the United States Census Bureau, WHO, and as part of previous iterations of the Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study (GBD). Previous iterations of the GBD used population estimates from UNPOP, which were not derived in a way that was internally consistent wit…

  • Global, regional, and national incidence, prevalence, and years lived with disability for 328 diseases and injuries for 195 countries, 1990–2016

Open Access•Theo Vos, Amanuel Alemu Abajobir et al.•ARTICLE•The Lancet•2017

BACKGROUND: As mortality rates decline, life expectancy increases, and populations age, non-fatal outcomes of diseases and injuries are becoming a larger component of the global burden of disease. The Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study 2016 (GBD 2016) provides a comprehensive assessment of prevalence, incidence, and years lived with disability (YLDs) for 328 causes in 195 countries and territories from 1990 to 2016. METHO…

  • Global, regional, and national age-sex specific mortality for 264 causes of death, 1980–2016

Open Access•Mohsen Naghavi, Amanuel Alemu Abajobir et al.•ARTICLE•The Lancet•2017

BACKGROUND: Monitoring levels and trends in premature mortality is crucial to understanding how societies can address prominent sources of early death. The Global Burden of Disease 2016 Study (GBD 2016) provides a comprehensive assessment of cause-specific mortality for 264 causes in 195 locations from 1980 to 2016. This assessment includes evaluation of the expected epidemiological transition with changes in development and where local patterns …

  • Global, regional, and national under-5 mortality, adult mortality, age-specific mortality, and life expectancy, 1970–2016

Open Access•Haidong Wang, Amanuel Alemu Abajobir et al.•ARTICLE•The Lancet•2017

BACKGROUND: Detailed assessments of mortality patterns, particularly age-specific mortality, represent a crucial input that enables health systems to target interventions to specific populations. Understanding how all-cause mortality has changed with respect to development status can identify exemplars for best practice. To accomplish this, the Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study 2016 (GBD 2016) estimated age-specific and …

  • Global, regional, and national disability-adjusted life-years (Dalys) for 333 diseases and injuries and healthy life expectancy (Hale) for 195 countries and territories, 1990–2016

Open Access•Simon I Hay, Amanuel Alemu Abajobir et al.•ARTICLE•The Lancet•2017

BACKGROUND: Measurement of changes in health across locations is useful to compare and contrast changing epidemiological patterns against health system performance and identify specific needs for resource allocation in research, policy development, and programme decision making. Using the Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study 2016, we drew from two widely used summary measures to monitor such changes in population health: di…

  • Effectiveness of Educational Interventions on Fireworks-related Injuries among Schoolboys

Masood Naseripour, Reza Hamidian et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Health Behavior•2017

The interventions failed to lessen risky behaviors and fireworks-related injuries among male teenagers

  • Antilock braking system effectiveness in prevention of road traffic crashes in Iran

    Open Access•Davoud Khorasani‐Zavareh, Davoud Khorasani-Zavareh et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2013

Law enforcement to maintain safe distance and adhere to speed limit while driving, is needed to raise the effectiveness of ABS. This is as necessary as considering mandatory outfitting of ABS. Safety authorities should first consider the global experience and local evidence, before adopting any specific policy in this regard. The drivers need to learn the right way to use ABS for maximum effectiveness

  • Spring cleaning as a safety risk

    Open Access•Soheil Saadat, Mojgan Karbakhsh•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2011

The incidence of spring cleaning related injuries is high enough to raise concern in health system authorities. It could be estimated that about 23,927 to 38,283 persons get injured during the spring cleaning in Tehran at the beginning of every Persian new year. In addition, about 8,773-18,344 of these cases are expected to be severe enough to lead to medical attention (considering 7,975,679 as the population of Tehran at the time of study). Impr…

  • Burden of traumatic spine fractures in Tehran, Iran

    Open Access•Maziar Moradi‐lakeh, Maziar Moradi-Lakeh et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2011

This study showed a considerable burden for TSFs mainly due to associated injuries and increased lifelong RRM in patients with TSF

  • Epidemiology of traffic injuries and motor vehicles utilization in the Capital of Iran

    Open Access•Soheil Saadat, Hamid Soori•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2011

This population-based study demonstrates that the morbidity rate of RTIs is about ten times higher than the national figures reported by other available sources; and this can serve as an important warning to countries like Iran to prioritize this issue in their public health activities. To ensure more safety on our roads, we need to establish an injury surveillance system, and a more accurate national data capture system on RTIs

  • Population based estimates of non-fatal injuries in the capital of Iran

Open Access•Soheil Saadat, Mostafa Mafi et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2011

This population based study showed that the real incidence of non-fatal injuries in the capital of Iran is more than the formal hospital-based estimates. These injuries impose non trivial medical and indirect cost on the community. The out of pocket medical expense of non-fatal injuries to Tehran population is estimated as 27 million USD per year. Effective strategies should be considered to minimize these injuries and decrease the great financia…

  • Health-related quality of life among individuals with long-standing spinal cord injury

Open Access•Soheil Saadat, Seyed Amir Hossein Javadi et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2010

The study findings showed that veterans with SCI experienced lower HRQOL than their non-veteran counterparts. A qualitative study is recommended to evaluate why HRQOL was lower in veterans than in non-veterans with SCI although veterans had higher incomes as a result of their pensions and increased access to equipment, and medications. To improve quality of life in both veterans and non-veterans with spinal cord injuries, policy changes or implem…

  • Association of waterpipe smoking and road traffic crashes

    Open Access•Soheil Saadat, Mojgan Karbakhsh•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2010

Being waterpipe and/or cigarette smoker and DDT were the independent predictors of the number of traffic crashes in Poisson regression model. If the increased risk of RTC among waterpipe or cigarette smokers is seen in other studies, it would be beneficial to promote tobacco cessation and control strategies through injury prevention initiatives

  • Perceived Risk and Risk-taking Behavior During the Festival Firework

Soheil Saadat•ARTICLE•American Journal of Health Behavior•2010

These findings can be of practical importance to increase safety during festivals by improving risk perception in the community
