Associations between Pharmacotherapy for Cardiovascular Diseases and Periodontitis
PD was found in 74% of participants. The range of cardioprotective drug use among participants was 7% (ARBs) to 32% (beta-blockers). After adjusting for age, sex, number of teeth, smoking, and education, ASA's use was related to a lower prevalence of PD in all dentate participants (odds ratio (OR) = 0.63, 95% confidence interval (CI): 0.40-0.99). The use of ARBs and statins was found to be associated with a higher prevalence of PD in persons havi…
Major dietary patterns and carotid intima-media thickness in Bangladesh
Objective Carotid intima-media thickness (IMT) is a validated surrogate marker of preclinical atherosclerosis and is predictive of cardiovascular morbidity and mortality. Research on the association between IMT and diet, however, is lacking, especially in low-income countries or low-BMI populations. Design Cross-sectional analysis. Dietary intakes were measured using a validated, thirty-nine-item FFQ at baseline cohort recruitment. IMT measuremen…
Antiretroviral Therapy in Resource-Poor Countries: Illusions and Realities
The prospects for antiretroviral therapy in resource-poor settings have changed recently and considerably with the availability of generic drugs, the drastic price reduction of brand-name drugs, and the simplification of treatment. However, such cost reductions, although allowing the implementation of large-scale donor programs, have yet to render treatment accessible and possible in the general population. Successfully providing HIV treatment in…
Correlates of Breast-feeding in a Rural Population
Rural women with less than college educations and who work full-time may need the most support for initiating and maintaining breast-feeding
Desvarieux Et Al. Respond
We appreciated the cogent comments of Long et al. regarding our report on deferred directly observed therapy (D-DOT) for tuberculosis treatment in Haiti.1 Although universal and full-duration DOT may be successfully implemented in a rural area like Deschapelles, where Long and Scalcini have been performing their excellent work, it is unrealistic to implement it in the urban setting of revolving addresses prevalent in Port-au-Prince. In this setti…

Reporting sexual risk behavior for HIV: A practical risk index and a method for improving risk indices
OBJECTIVES: As a means of enhancing public health efforts to control sexual transmission of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), methods were developed to report on risk behavior in a manner that is comparable and widely interpretable. METHODS: An elementary sexual behavior risk index (the vaginal episode equivalent index) that is in accord with some of the essential knowledge about sexual transmission of HIV is described, and a multivariate ordin…
Directly observed therapy and treatment completion for tuberculosis in the United States: Is universal supervised therapy necessary
OBJECTIVES: This study examined the relationship between directly observed therapy and treatment completion rates in the years before and after infusion of federal funding for tuberculosis (TB) control in 1993. METHODS: An ecological study of estimated directly observed therapy rates and 12-month treatment completion rates from 1990 through 1994 was undertaken for TB control programs in all 25 cities and counties across the nation with 100 or mor…
HIV and Aids in Haiti: Recent developments
Both the seroprevalence and epidemiology of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection have demonstrated substantial changes in Haiti since the beginning of the epidemic in the early 1980s. Although seroprevalence rates vary greatly according to the population group tested, surveys of healthy urban adults have indicated an increase in HIV infection from about 8% in 1986 to 11% in 1991. The rate in rural areas remains at about 3%. Tuberculosis, …
