Strike-a-Light Flints in the Assemblages of the Aurignacian Sites at Kostenki (Kostenki 1, Layer III, and Kostenki 14, Layer in Volcanic Ash)
Purpose. To determine whether the newly identified strike-a-light flints from two key Aurignacian assemblages at Kostenki – Kostenki 1, Layer III, and Kostenki 14, Layer in Volcanic Ash – can contribute to the debate on cultural affinity between these sites, which share a similar lithic industry but differ in their osseous tools and ornaments. Material and methods. We studied the lithic collections from the 1980s excavations of Kostenki 1, Layer …
Bone Industries of the Middle Palaeolithic of Eastern Europe and the Northern Caucasus
This paper provides for the first time an overview and comparison of Middle Palaeoliohic bone industries of two adjacent regions — Eastern Europe and the Northern Caucasus. The bone tools of Khotylevo I are newly introduced into scientific circulation, while a number of other important collections, including Barakaevskaya Cave, Staroselye Grotto and Rozhok I site, are considered at a new level of analysis. The composition and preservation of thes…
The Earliest Evidence of the Manufacturing of Solutions and Viscoplastic Mixtures From Paint Pigments on the Russian Plain in the Middle Paleolithic
The article presents the results of studying a series of small individual pigment particles discovered in the cultural layer of the Chelyuskinets II site, which is part of the Lower Volga Middle Paleolithic group together with the Eurasian reference site Sukhaya Mechetka and the Zaikino Pepelishche site. Preliminary results of OSL dating indicate the age of the cultural layer in the range of 150–165 thousand years BP (mid-MIS 6). The pigments of …
Identification of Hafting Traces on Palaeolithic Stone Tools
The main objective of this paper is to refine the morphological and traceological criteria for identifying hafting traces on the Palaeolithic stone artifacts. After reviewing relevant publications, the authors proceed to the description of their own experiments aimed at the identification of different kinds of macro- and microwear tracers that formed as a result of hafting. The characteristics of these traces depended on the haft material, durati…
Pebble tools and colored rocks in the collection of the Late Palaeolithic site of Eliseevitchi 1 stored in Kustkamera Museum
The article presents a functional definition of several finds made by K.M. Polikarpovich at the initial stage of studying the most interesting and complex site of the Late Upper Paleolithic - Eliseevichi 1. Previously, a large number of stones found in the ash lens in the excavation area 2 (1936) were noted only as a specific feature of the cultural layer, but their categorical analysis was not carried out. This study focuses on the tools identif…

Is there a Link between Stone Polishing and “Complex Gathering” in the Palaeolithic? (based on the Materials of the Kostenki-Borshevo Sites)
Spectacular finds at some of the Gravettian sites of the Kostenki-Borshevo region on the Don River served for the reconstruction of the economic and technological characteristics of the Middle Upper Paleolithic. The materials of these sites contain large polished stone artifacts, but till recently the technology of their manufacture has not been studied in the context of the whole industry. Quartzite slabs with wear traces indicative of their use…
Personal Ornaments from Kostenki 17, Layer II
Layer II of Kostenki 17 has yielded one of the earliest Upper Palaeolithic assemblages in Eastern Europe. In addition to lithic and bone implements, the collection includes numerous ornaments with perforated holes made from fox teeth, petrified remains and soft stones. This collection of ornaments is unique in both the variety of raw materials and the peculiarity of manufacturing technologies. The paper presents the results of a use-wear study of…

Kostenki 17 (Spitsynskaya)
This paper describes the results of 2017-2020 fieldwork at the Upper Palaeolithic site of Kostenki 17 (Spitsynskaya). This work established the presence of five new horizons of finds, in addition to the two cultural layers known since the 1950s. Given the thickness of the Upper Humic Bed, it is clear that the horizons of finds are separated by sterile layers, and correspond to the existence of different sites on this part of the promontory. Despi…

Middle Paleolithic Site Sukhaya Mechёtka
The Sukhaya Mechёtka site, located on the northern outskirts of Volgograd, has attracted the attention of Paleolithic researchers since its discovery in 1951 by geologists A.I.Koptev and M.N. Grishchenko. The materials of the site - a collection of stone products currently kept at the MAE RAS, and chronostratigraphic information – can be considered as perfect by standards of open Paleolithic complexes. To a large extent, the site acquired such a …
Primary reduction technology in the Sukhaya Mechetka site assemblage
The Sukhaya Mechetka site in the Lower Volga region being widely known due to the unique preservation of cultural remains, their clear geological position and a rich set of tools has long become a kind of icon of the Middle Paleolithic of Eastern Europe. Improtantly the site was excavated over a wide area (about 650 square meters). During the excavation an assemblage of stone items including more than 350 tools, cores and about 10,000 flint and q…
