  • Outcomes of a Pilot Mobile App Just-in-Time-Adaptive-Intervention Supporting Coping Skills in Trauma Affected People with HIV

    Open Access•Rayna E Gasik, Simone J Skeen et al.•ARTICLE•AIDS and Behavior•2026

People with HIV (PWH) experience trauma and mental health burdens at higher rates than seronegative individuals. Psychosocial interventions have shown promise for improving mental health and coping among PWH, but relatively few trauma-informed, coping-focused mobile health (mHealth) interventions exist. This pilot study evaluates the preliminary outcomes of NOLA Gem, a just-in-time adaptive intervention (JITAI)-based mHealth app designed to suppo…

  • Pathways from violence exposure to medication non-adherence

Gretchen Clum, Aubrey Spriggs Madkour et al.•ARTICLE•AIDS Care•2025

In the current study, we examine associations between exposure to violence and antiretroviral medication adherence in persons with HIV (PWH) in a southern city in the United States. We include investigation of a variety of violence exposures including childhood sexual abuse, physical abuse, witnessing family violence, lifetime violence exposures and current stress related to violence experiences, as well as neighborhood violence exposure. We exam…

  • Exploring the impact of coping self-efficacy on psychological distress among violence-affected people living with HIV

Kara A Steele, Kara Steele et al.•ARTICLE•AIDS Care•2024

This study examines the relationship between coping self-efficacy, concurrent stress, and psychological distress (borderline/clinical anxiety, depression, and PTSD symptoms) among people living with HIV (PLWH). Using data from a cohort of PLWH living in a southern peri-urban area, logistic regression analyses were conducted to determine the effects of self-reported coping self-efficacy on psychological distress in a sample of 85 violence-affected…

  • Life Course Stressors, Latent Coping Strategies, Alcohol Use, and Adherence among People with HIV

Open Access•Amrita Gill, Gretchen Clum et al.•ARTICLE•AIDS and Behavior•2024

People with HIV (PWH) have often experienced chronic stressors across their lifespan, including adverse childhood experiences (ACES), lifetime economic hardship (LEH), and concurrent stressors associated with living in urban areas (urban stress). Prolonged exposure to stressors might result in differential coping patterns among PWH that can impact care trajectories. We utilized a life course-informed approach to examine chronic stressors as antec…

  • The Impact of Childhood Adversity on Life Course Alcohol Use Patterns and Health Status Among People Living with HIV

Open Access•Rayna E Gasik, Aubrey Spriggs Madkour et al.•ARTICLE•AIDS and Behavior•2024

Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) and financial hardship are associated with increased likelihood of heavier alcohol use and health challenges in adulthood among persons living with HIV (PWH). We examined whether retrospectively captured lifetime drinking trajectories are a pathway through which childhood hardships affect current health in a sample of 365 adult PWH. Childhood economic hardship and ACEs were used as main predictors. Measures of…

  • Using Geographic Momentary Assessment to Explore Spatial Environment Influences on Wellbeing in People With HIV

    Open Access•Rayna E Gasik, Ethan A Smith et al.•ARTICLE•AIDS and Behavior•2024

Place-based socio-economic and racial inequities contribute to health disparities among people with HIV (PWH). We used geographic ecological momentary assessment (GEMA) methodologies to explore the interplay between psychosocial outcomes in daily diaries and community spatial measures among PWH in New Orleans. PWH (N = 69) were recruited from a clinic-based cohort study. Micro-longitudinal data were collected via smartphone-based daily diaries an…

  • Patterns and correlates of substance use among young adult African American women

Aubrey Spriggs Madkour, Gretchen Clum et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Ethnicity in Substance…•2020

Patterns and correlates of substance use among urban African American young women (ages 18-19, n = 459) were examined. Four patterns were identified: no/infrequent alcohol and marijuana use (64.9%); recent alcohol only use (18.2%); recent marijuana only use (7.9%); and recent alcohol and marijuana use (9.0%). Having a recent male sexual partner and a history of sexual coercion were associated with increased odds of marijuana-only and dual use. Gr…

  • Victimization and Sexual Risk Behavior in Young, HIV Positive Women

Open Access•Gretchen A Clum, Gretchen Clum et al.•ARTICLE•AIDS and Behavior•2011

  • Mediators of HIV-related stigma and risk behavior in HIV infected young women

    Gretchen Clum, Shang-En Chung et al.•ARTICLE•AIDS Care•2009

Stigma in HIV positive persons has been associated with numerous negative sequelae, including decreased social support, depressive symptoms, and engagement in risk behaviors. Few studies examined the interrelationships of these factors to facilitate understanding of the mechanisms by which HIV stigma influences risk behavior, thus the current study focuses on identifying pathways between HIV-related stigma and risk behavior in 147 young HIV posit…

  • Child Abuse in Young, HIV-Positive Women

Open Access•Gretchen A Clum, Gretchen Clum et al.•ARTICLE•Qualitative Health Research•2009

In this article we explore the lives of young women living with HIV who experienced physical and/or sexual abuse in childhood. Using a modified version of the Life Story Interview, 40 women recruited from HIV clinics in three different states participated in a qualitative interview. Interviews covered abuse experiences, cognitive and emotional consequences of abuse, coping strategies, and sexual behavior and relationships. Overall, these young wo…
