  • Characterising the effects of displacement on gender-based violence among women living with HIV in Ukraine

Open Access•Anita L Wolfe, Mary Anne Roach et al.•ARTICLE•BMJ Global Health•2025

INTRODUCTION: Women living with HIV (WLHIV) in conflict zones are at high risk of sexual and physical violence due to instability, stigma and proximity to military personnel. Given sustained ongoing conflict, this study evaluated the relationship between displacement and gender-based violence (GBV), including experiences of sexual violence, abuse by healthcare workers and reproductive coercion among WLHIV in Ukraine. These forms of violence are c…

  • Profiles of Sexual Economic Exchanges among Women in Kisumu, Kenya

Open Access•Mary Anne Roach, Talia A Loeb et al.•ARTICLE•Archives of Sexual Behavior•2025

Sexual economic exchanges, including sex work and transactional sex, have been consistently associated with HIV acquisition among young women in sub-Saharan Africa. Heterogeneity in HIV vulnerability across overlapping types of sexual economic exchange has not been sufficiently explored, limiting appropriate and effective linkage to prevention interventions. From January 2017 to May 2018, cross-sectional data were captured at screening for entry …

  • Exploring differences in HIV stigma and treatment interruptions between young and older adults in Zimbabwe

Open Access•Vicki Chen, Venessa Chen et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2025

Young adults living with HIV in Zimbabwe reported twice the lifetime incidence of treatment interruptions and greater levels of internalized and anticipated stigma compared to older adults. The associations between stigma and treatment interruptions highlight the opportunity for interventions that address stigma for young adults, which may optimize treatment adherence during early adulthood

  • The impact of Covid-19 restrictions on HIV prevention and treatment services for key populations in South Africa

Open Access•Danwei Yao, Naomi Hill et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2024

Service provision rebounded from the initial shock created by pandemic-related restrictions, and HIV services were largely maintained for KP in South Africa. These results suggest that HIV service delivery among programs designed for KP was able to be flexible and resilient to the evolving restrictions. The results of this study can inform plans for future pandemics and large-scale disruptions to the delivery of HIV services

  • Sexual violence affecting female sex workers in Côte d’Ivoire

Open Access•Nuria Gallego Márquez, Nika Elmi et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2024

Findings confirm a high burden of sexual violence among female sex workers in Côte d'Ivoire, and a need to implement large structural changes that enable female sex workers to seek protection as well as health resources after experiencing sexual violence. This may include reform in the form of targeted social, clinical and mental health resources, along with community development opportunities

    Open Access•Nivedita L Bhushan, Katherine B Rucinski et al.•ARTICLE•AIDS and Behavior•2024

  • Sexual and Reproductive Health Service Needs Associated with Underage Initiation of Selling Sex among Adult Female Sex Workers in Guinea-Bissau

Open Access•Ashley Grosso, Lindsay Berg et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2022

These data suggest that early initiation of selling sex among adult FSW in Guinea-Bissau is common. Social services for youth and integrated HIV and reproductive health services are critical to address the persisting sexual and reproductive health needs of FSW who started selling sex while underage

  • Trajectories of fertility intentions among women living with HIV in South Africa

    Katherine B Rucinski, Kimberly A Powers et al.•ARTICLE•AIDS Care•2021

Fertility intentions are thought to be dynamic among women of reproductive age, yet few studies have assessed fertility intentions over time among women with HIV. We examine temporal patterns of fertility intentions in women with HIV to assess the extent to which fertility intentions - and the corresponding need for safer conception and judicious antiretroviral therapy (ART) regimen selection - vary over time. 850 non-pregnant HIV-positive women …
