Leader-in-context and historical leadership research
Context remains an undervalued property in leadership studies (LS). After diagnosing some of the reasons for the dominance of leader centrism in LS, the article turns its attention to remedies. In doing so, it outlines a formula for what should be the prime lens in LS: the way in which leader and context interact, and how this is related to outcomes. Arguing that this leader-in-context is key to the understanding of leadership, the article sugges…
Ukraine 2022, through the leadership binoculars
The essay provides a take, by a historian, on the 2022 Ukraine war. It draws attention to the fact that, over the past 20 years, terms such as “game-changer” or “turning point” have been frequently employed to characterize important junctures. However, 2022 is qualitatively different from all of these, as it represents the antithesis to 1989 and marks the end of an entire era. From the leadership perspective, one immediate effect of a turning poi…
Linear work generation of R-MAT graphs
R-MAT (for Recursive MATrix) is a simple, widely used model for generating graphs with a power law degree distribution, a small diameter, and communitys structure. It is particularly attractive for generating very large graphs because edges can be generated independently by an arbitrary number of processors. However, current R-MAT generators need time logarithmic in the number of nodes for generating an edge— constant time for generating one bit …
Leadership and populism: A parallel reading of Hannah Arendt and Franz Neumann
Populism was the Cambridge Dictionary’s new word of the year 2017. The surge in interest reflects recent events such as the UK Brexit referendum, the arrival of Donald Trump at the helm of the US presidency, or the electoral victories of self-styled anti-establishment leaders throughout Europe and the World. The first part of this article explores the scientific status of populism. It concludes that the widespread use of populism as a term obscur…
The interplay of the Dirty Hands of British area bombing and the wicked problem of defeating Nazi Germany in the Second World War – A lesson in leadership ethics
The British area bombing of Germany in the Second World War has provided for enduring ethical controversy. Eschewing conventional approaches, we present area bombing as a Dirty Hands leadership response to the Wicked Problem of Britain’s wartime strategic predicament. Using historical methodology, we establish two distinct phases in area bombing: 1942–1944, when this was ethically contentious but politically necessary; and 1944–1945, which lacks …

The ‘strange Mr Kastner’ – Leadership ethics in Holocaust-era Hungary, in the light of grey zones and dirty hands
As the leader of a group of rescue activists in Holocaust-era Budapest, Rezső Kasztner saved the lives of large numbers of Jews through negotiations with Nazi officials. This activity coincided with the deportation of thousands of others, and after the war Kasztner was considered by some to have made a Faustian bargain: his silence in return for the lives of the few. The ethics of this case have been approached from a variety of theoretical vanta…

Is CSR cognizant of the conflictuality of globalisation? A realist critique
Purpose – The article aims to cast a novel light on the extended theoretical conceptualisation of corporate citizenship, in as far as it criticises the insufficient embedding of international corporate social responsibility (CSR), corporate social performance (CSP) and sustainability initiatives in the geopolitical reality and conflictuality of the global business environment. Design/methodology/approach – The article offers a unique interdiscipl…
Economic draining – German black market operations in France, 1940–1944
Study of the black market is vital to understanding the social, economic and political stakes of the occupation in the Second World War. It allows a re-examination of German occupation policy, but also highlights civilian survival strategies, wealth distribution and the changing occupier – occupied relationship. In France, the German occupiers spent at least 15% of all financial resources made available to them through the Vichy occupation levy o…
Medicine Murder in Colonial Lesotho: The Anatomy of a Moral Crisis
Medicine murder involved the cutting of body parts from victims, usually while they were still alive, to be used for the preparation of medicines intended to enhance the power of the perpetrators. A startling increase in cases of medicine murder apparently took place in Basutoland (now Lesotho), in southern Africa, in the late 1940s and the early 1950s. It gave rise to a dramatic crisis of late colonial rule. Was this increase a real one? If so, …
Race Relations in Britain: A Developing Agenda
Bringing together distinguished experts in the field of race relations this book addresses questions which are increasingly relevant in the current socio-political context of Great Britain. The kind of visions of multicultural Britain which are currently being canvassed and the problems which ethnic minorities continue to face are addressed, together with an examination of the new policy initiatives which are needed to tackle these problems. Race…

Medicine murder involved the cutting of body parts from victims, usually while they were still alive, to be used for the preparation of medicines intended to enhance the power of the perpetrators. A 'very startling' increase in cases of medicine murder apparently took place in Basutoland (now Lesotho), in southern Africa, in the late 1940s and the early 1950s. It gave rise to a dramatic crisis of late colonial rule. Was this increase a real one? …
Medicine Murder in Basutoland: Colonial Rule and Moral Crisis
This article analyses an acute moral crisis in the colonial administration of Basutoland in the late 1940s. It was provoked by a contagious rash of what became known as 'medicine murders', apparently perpetrated by senior chiefs. Two particular murders of this kind are examined in detail, as a result of which, in 1949, two very senior chiefs and some of their followers were hanged. This harshly dramatic episode brought into stark question the mea…

Moshoeshoe, Chief of the Sotho
Sotho Arms and Ammunition in the Nineteenth Century
Before the difaqane , warfare among the Sotho was usually little more than cattle-raiding. Some attacks were combined operations executed by all the fighting men of a chiefdom, but most were the exploits of a few adventurous individuals. The raiders would each be armed with a bunch of long spears, a knobkerrie and a light oxhide shield, and they would usually approach the enemy's cattle along river beds and through mountain kloofs, relying partly…
