  • Non-disclosure of Known HIV Status among People Living with HIV in the Mozambique Population-Based HIV Impact Assessment (Insida 2021)

Open Access•K Carter McCabe, Ângelo Augusto et al.•ARTICLE•AIDS and Behavior•2025

  • Recognizing the hidden

Open Access•Cynthia Semá Baltazar, Makini Boothe et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2021

High quality, representative data from HIV surveillance systems that have country ownership and commitment are critical for guiding national HIV responses, especially among key and priority populations given their disproportionate role in the transmission of the virus. Between 2011 to 2013, the Mozambique Ministry of Health has conducted five Biobehavioral Surveillance Surveys among key populations (female sex workers, men who has sex with men an…

  • Low engagement in HIV services and progress through the treatment cascade among key populations living with HIV in Mozambique

    Open Access•Makini Boothe, Makini A S Boothe et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2021

Among the three high risk populations in Mozambique, losses occurred throughout critical areas of service uptake with the most alarming breakpoint occurring at knowledge of HIV status. Special attention should be given to increasing HIV testing and linkage to ART treatment. Future surveys will provide the opportunity to monitor improvements across the cascade in line with global targets and should include viral load testing to guarantee a more co…

  • Prevalence and risk factors associated with HIV/hepatitis B and HIV/hepatitis C co-infections among people who inject drugs in Mozambique

Open Access•Cynthia Semá Baltazar, Makini Boothe et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2020

There is a high burden of HBV and HCV among HIV-infected PWID in Mozambique. Our results highlight the need for targeted harm reduction interventions that include needle exchange programs and integrated services for the diagnosis and treatment of HIV, HBV and HCV to address these epidemics among PWID. Efforts should be made to strengthen ART coverage in the population as an important treatment strategy for both viruses

  • Access to and use of health and social services among people who inject drugs in two urban areas of Mozambique, 2014

Open Access•Liliana Dengo Baloi, Makini Boothe et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2020

Mozambique urgently needs to establish specialized harm reduction programs for PWID and improve awareness of available resources. Services should be located in hot spot areas to address issues related to distance, transportation and the planning required for safe injection. Specific attention should go to the creation of PWID-focused health and social services outside of state-sponsored psychiatric treatment centers

  • Risk Factors Associated with HIV Among Men Who Have Sex Only with Men and Men Who Have Sex with Both Men and Women in Three Urban Areas in Mozambique

Open Access•Isabel Sathane, Roberta Horth et al.•ARTICLE•AIDS and Behavior•2016

  • Socio-demographic, Behavioral and Health Characteristics of Underage Female Sex Workers in Mozambique

Open Access•Celso Inguane, Roberta Horth et al.•ARTICLE•AIDS and Behavior•2015

  • Prevalence of HIV and Associated Risk Factors Among Long Distance Truck Drivers in Inchope, Mozambique, 2012

Open Access•Carlos Botão, Roberta Horth et al.•ARTICLE•AIDS and Behavior•2015

  • High Burden of HIV Infection and Risk Behaviors Among Female Sex Workers in Three Main Urban Areas of Mozambique

Open Access•Ângelo Augusto, Ângelo do Rosário Augusto et al.•ARTICLE•AIDS and Behavior•2015

  • Correlates of HIV Testing Among Men Who have Sex with Men in Three Urban Areas of Mozambique

Open Access•Roberta Horth, Roberta Z Horth et al.•ARTICLE•AIDS and Behavior•2015

This is the first study to identify levels of recent HIV testing and associated factors among men who have sex with men (MSM) in Mozambique. Using data from Maputo (n = 493), Beira (n = 572), and Nampula/Nacala (n = 347), collected via respondent-driven sampling in 2011, and excluding those with prior known infection, we found that 30.4 % [95 % confidence interval (CI) 25.0-36.3 %], 42.1 % (95 % CI 36.8-47.3 %) and 29.8 % (95 % CI 22.9-36.9 %), r…

  • HIV Prevalence and Risk Behaviors Among Mozambicans Working in South African Mines

Open Access•Cynthia Semá Baltazar, Roberta Horth et al.•ARTICLE•AIDS and Behavior•2014

Mineworkers are considered a population at risk for HIV due to risk behaviors associated with migratory work patterns. This was the first study in Mozambique to determine the prevalence of HIV and associated demographic and risk behaviors, and assess use and access to prevention and healthcare services among Mozambicans working in South African mines. Men who had worked in a South African mine in the past 12 months were recruited between February…

  • Men Who Have Sex with Men in Mozambique

Open Access•Rassul Nala, Beverley Cummings et al.•ARTICLE•AIDS and Behavior•2014

The population of men who have sex with men (MSM) has been largely ignored in HIV-related policies and programming in Mozambique and there is little information about the contribution of MSM to the HIV epidemic. An integrated biological and behavioral study among MSM using respondent-driven sampling was conducted in 2011 in Maputo, Beira and Nampula/Nacala. Men who reported engaging in oral or anal sex with other men in the last 12 months answere…
