  • Social, sexual and structural factors shaping HIV vulnerability among transgender women in Mali

Open Access•Marion Fiorentino, Kanuya Coulibaly et al.•ARTICLE•AIDS Care•2026

Transgender women (TGW) in Mali face discrimination and stigma, possibly exacerbating HIV vulnerability and limiting access to health services. We identified HIV vulnerability factors among TGW by exploring perceptions and experiences of TGW from urban, peri-urban and rural areas, and those of community workers, using six focus groups (n = 44) and a data thematic content analysis. The analysis highlighted that TGW’s sexual networks included their…

  • Men Who Have Sex with Both Men and Women in West Africa

Open Access•Marion Fiorentino, Bakary Coulibaly et al.•ARTICLE•Archives of Sexual Behavior•2024

HIV is highly prevalent in men who have sex with men (MSM) in West Africa. Many MSM in the region also have sex with women (MSMW). Accordingly, they are a potential bridge subpopulation for HIV transmission to women. We aimed to evaluate the proportions and characteristics of West African MSMW at high behavioral risk of acquiring HIV from male partners and transmitting it to female partners (HBRMF). The cohort ANRS-12324 CohMSM Study included 630…

  • Strategies to improve PrEP uptake among West African men who have sex with men

Open Access•Thijs Reyniers, Stéphane Alain Yoro Babo et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Public Health•2023

Introduction: West African men who have sex with men (MSM) remain at substantial risk of contracting HIV. Pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) can be an effective game-changer in reducing the number of HIV infections in MSM communities. To optimize the roll-out of PrEP, we need to better understand how we can increase its uptake. The objective of this study was to explore the perceptions of West African MSM toward PrEP and their proposed strategies to…

  • Highly precarious general and sexual health conditions of young domestic servants

Open Access•Marion Fiorentino, Abdouramane Coulibaly et al.•ARTICLE•AIDS Care•2023

Most domestic servants (DS) in Mali are very young female migrants living in precarious conditions. We aimed to understand their living and working conditions in relation to their general and sexual health. Seven focus groups (53 participants) were conducted by the DS community-based organization ADDAD. Narratives were thematically analyzed using an inductive method. The dominant emerging theme was DS' strong dependence on their employers. Employ…

  • Socio-behavioral correlates of pre-exposure prophylaxis use and correct adherence in men who have sex with men in West Africa

Open Access•August Eubanks, Bakary Coulibaly et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2022

Community-based clinic attendance and PE contact outside of scheduled visits were both associated with higher PrEP engagement, but some socially and economically marginalized participants struggled with adherence. As scale-up continues in West Africa, we recommend implementing community-based interventions and providing extra support for vulnerable users to ensure adequate PrEP engagement

  • Rate and Predictors of Ineffective HIV Protection in African Men Who Have Sex with Men Taking Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis

Open Access•August Eubanks, Bakary Coulibaly et al.•ARTICLE•AIDS and Behavior•2022

  • Adherence to quarterly HIV prevention services and its impact on HIV incidence in men who have sex with men in West Africa (CohMSM ANRS 12324 – Expertise France)

Open Access•Ter Tiero Elias Dah, Issifou Yaya et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2021

    ClinicalTrials.gov, number NCT02626286 (December 10, 2015)

  • Taking empowerment into account

    Pierre-Julien Coulaud, Marie Préau et al.•ARTICLE•AIDS Care•2019

Empowerment is an ongoing process through which individuals and communities appropriate power and acquire the capability to function autonomously. Research on empowerment in men who have sex with men (MSM) is lacking in community-based contexts. We investigated the relationship between willingness to be empowered and HIV care needs in West African MSM accessing community-based organisations' (CBO) services. Fifty-three interviews were administere…

  • Sex work among female workers in the traditional mining sector in Mali – results from the ANRS-12339 Sanu Gundo cross-sectional study in 2015

Cheick Haïballa Kounta, Luis Sagaon-Teyssier et al.•ARTICLE•African Journal of AIDS Research•2019

Female sex workers (FSW) in mining sites are considered to be at very high risk of HIV infection. We aimed to characterize FSW at the Kôkôyô artisanal gold mining site in Mali, and identify factors associated with sex work using data from ANRS-12339 Sanu Gundo, a cross-sectional survey conducted in 2015 at the mine by ARCAD-SIDA, a Malian non-governmental organisation. People attending HIV-prevention activities were invited to participate in the …

  • Les Guinéens de l'extérieur

Amadou Bah Oury, Bintou Keita et al.•ARTICLE•Politique africaine•1989•Cited by: 7
