Enhancing HIV self-testing uptake among university students in Rwanda
Although university students reported the needs and benefits of HIV self-testing, uptake remains low due to misinformation, unawareness, unavailability, and the high cost of HIV self-testing kits. Increasing awareness, availing HIVST kits, and addressing the other reported barriers to HIV self-testing, is essential for the achievement of the universal goal of HIV status awareness among university students
Knowledge, attitudes, practice and factors associated with the prevalence of modern contraceptives use among women from historically marginalized community in Rwanda
The community of the historically marginalized people has limited knowledge of modern contraception surprisingly with high prevalence of modern contraceptive methods compared to indigenous people from other regions. Viral Suppression Following Same-day Initiation Antiretroviral Therapy among Persons Aware of their Classification as Recent or Long-term Infected with HIV Per Recent Infection Testing Algorithm, Rwan…
HIV risk behaviour, viraemia, and transmission across HIV cascade stages including low-level viremia
As antiretroviral treatment (ART) coverage for people living with HIV (PLHIV) increases, HIV programmes require up-to-date information about evolving HIV risk behaviour and transmission risk, including those with low-level viremia (LLV; >50 to ≤1000 copies/mL), to guide prevention priorities. We aimed to assess differences in sexual risk behaviours, distribution of viral load (VL) and proportion of transmission across PLHIV subgroups. We analysed…
Factors associated with retention and adherence on Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis among men who have sex with men in Kigali, Rwanda
Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP) is recommended as an HIV prevention measure for men who have sex with men (MSM). We assessed factors associated with PrEP retention and adherence among MSM in Kigali, Rwanda. We undertook a retrospective cross-sectional study and used a questionnaire to obtain PrEP retention and adherence history from MSM enrolled in the key population (KP) program that attended scheduled follow-up clinics from four (4) health faci…
Is the Differentiated Service Delivery Model Suited to the Needs of People Living with HIV in Rwanda
Factors associated with retention on pre-exposure prophylaxis among female sex workers in Kigali, Rwanda
Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP) is recommended as an additional HIV prevention measure for persons at substantial risk of HIV acquisition. Although uptake of PrEP among female sex workers (FSW) has increased, retention remains low, resulting in suboptimal benefits. This study aimed at determining PrEP retention rates and associated factors among FSW in Kigali, Rwanda. We retrospectively studied records of 309 FSW abstracted from five (5) health c…
Association Between Clinical Encounter Frequency and HIV-Related Stigma Among Newly-Diagnosed People Living with HIV in Rwanda
HIV-related stigma in healthcare settings remains a key barrier to engaging people living with HIV (PLHIV) in care. This study investigated the association between clinical encounter frequency and HIV-related anticipated, enacted, and internalized stigma among newly-diagnosed PLHIV in Rwanda. From October 2020 to May 2022, we collected data from adult PLHIV on antiretroviral therapy (ART) in Kigali, Rwanda who were participating in a randomized, …
