Strengthening anal cancer prevention in Abuja, Nigeria
Anal cancer poses a significant risk for sexual minority males (SMM) living with HIV, with a 100-fold higher incidence compared to the general population. Despite success in high-income settings, training on anal cancer prevention in Africa faces challenges due to limited resources and lack of trained practitioners. We evaluated adapting training using an implementation science framework in a Nigerian SMM-friendly clinic. The Consolidated Framewo…
Evaluating the health impact, health-system costs and cost-effectiveness of using TrueNat on stool samples compared to usual care for the diagnosis of paediatric tuberculosis in primary care settings
The World Health Organisation (WHO) recommends rapid molecular diagnostics to improve bacteriological confirmation of tuberculosis in children. TrueNat MTB, MTB Plus and MTB-RIF Dx assays (Molbio Diagnostics, India), recommended by WHO, hold potential as point-of-care tests in resource-limited settings. Using stool samples with these assays could enhance testing access, improve linkage to care, reduce costs, and increase cost-effectiveness over t…
Building a national framework for multicentre research and clinical trials
There is limited capacity and infrastructure in sub-Saharan Africa to conduct clinical trials for the identification of efficient and effective new prevention, diagnostic and treatment modalities to address the disproportionate burden of disease. This paper reports on the process to establish locally driven infrastructure for multicentre research and trials in Nigeria known as the Nigeria Implementation Science Alliance Model Innovation and Resea…
Ease and equity of access to free DR-TB services in Nigeria- a qualitative analysis of policies, structures and processes
In the context of Nigeria's low case-finding and treatment coverage, applying an equity of access framework was necessary to highlight gaps in care. Differing social contexts of patients adversely affected their access to DR-TB care. We identified several strengths in DR-TB care delivery, including the current financial support that should be sustained. Our findings highlight the need for government's commitment and continued interventions
Cohort profile
This cohort describes the clinical and non-clinical profile of EPLHIV in Nigeria. We are following up the cohort to design and implement intervention programs, develop prognostic models to achieve better care outcomes for EPLHIV. This cohort would provide vital information for stakeholders in HIV prevention, care and treatment to understand the characteristics of EPLHIV
Depression, suicidality, and alcohol use disorder among people living with HIV/Aids in Nigeria
Some people living with HIV/AIDS also tend to suffer from depression, suicidality, and alcohol use disorders. These findings highlight the need for the integration of mental health services into HIV/AIDS care in Nigeria
A Decade of Monitoring HIV Epidemics in Nigeria
Partner HIV serostatus disclosure and determinants of serodiscordance among prevention of mother to child transmission clients in Nigeria
The results suggest that clinical staging (WHO) could be a better predictor of client- partner pair discordant or concordant HIV serostatus. Early partner testing and notification can avert seroconversion, hence properly designed and mainstreamed interventions that target serodiscordant couples are essential
Cervical cancer risk factors among HIV-infected Nigerian women
The prevalence of screening positive lesions or cervical cancer was lower than most previous reports from Africa. HIV-positive Nigerian women were at a marginally increased risk of cervical pre-cancer and cancer. These findings highlight the need for more epidemiological studies of cervical cancer and pre-cancerous lesions among HIV-positive women in Africa and an improved understanding of incidence and risk factors
