Mixed method program impact evaluation
The REBAHS LPSP II action launched in May 2022 by International Medical Corps (IMC) and Première Urgence Internationale (PUI) in Lebanon is a continuation of previous initiatives implemented in Primary Healthcare Centers (PHCCs) with the key aim to support service provision in PHCCs. This study aims to present a multi-faceted impact evaluation approach, quantifying the outcomes of the action and identifying areas for improvement. A mixed-method a…
Characterization of environmental and clinical surveillance inputs to support prospective integrated modeling of the polio endgame
National, regional, and global poliovirus surveillance needs continue to expand and evolve. The 1988 global resolution to eradicate polio necessitated the creation and support for a global poliovirus surveillance system able to identify poliovirus transmission anywhere and everywhere. Clinical surveillance of patients that present with acute flaccid paralysis (AFP) became an essential tool, and the need for standardized laboratory methods to dete…
The impact of 10-valent pneumococcal conjugate vaccine on the incidence of admissions to hospital with hypoxaemic and non-hypoxaemic pneumonia in Kenyan children
Observational evidence suggests that pneumococcal conjugate vaccines (PCVs) are more effective at reducing the incidence of hypoxaemic pneumonia compared to non-hypoxaemic pneumonia. We examined the impact of 10-valent PCV (PCV10, Synflorix) on hypoxaemic pneumonia hospital admissions using data from an existing PCV impact study of clinical and radiographic pneumonia. PCV10 was introduced, with catch-up among children under 5 years, in the Kilifi…
Economic burden of infectious diseases and its equity implications in Indian households
Infectious diseases remain one of the major causes of health and economic burden for Indian households. Furthermore, the magnitude of economic losses on account of infectious disease episodes varies widely across rich and poor households. The primary objective of this research is to estimate the equity impact of infectious disease episodes on out-of-pocket expenditure (OOPE) and wage losses among Indian households. We analysed the Social Consumpt…
Catastrophic costs for tuberculosis patients in India
As financial risk protection is one of the goals towards universal health coverage, detailed information on costs, catastrophic costs and other economic consequences related to any disease are required for designing social protection measures. End Tuberculosis (TB) Strategy set a milestone of achieving zero catastrophic cost by 2020. However, a recent literature review noted that 7%-32% TB affected households in India faced catastrophic cost. Stu…
The Impact of Covid-19 on the HIV Cascade of Care in Botswana – An Interrupted Time Series
Globally, Botswana has one of the highest burdens of HIV. This study estimated the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the HIV cascade of care in Sub-Saharan Africa. We conducted an interrupted time series analysis on national-level data to estimate the effect of COVID-19 on the numbers of HIV tests, positive HIV tests and ART initiations from April 2019 until March 2021. In multivariable Poisson interrupted time series regression, the COVID-19 lo…
Estimating the cost of illness of acute Japanese encephalitis and sequelae care in Vietnam and Laos
Background Japanese encephalitis (JE) is a leading cause of acute encephalitis syndrome and resulting neurological disability in Asia and the Western Pacific. This study aims to estimate the cost of acute care, initial rehabilitation and sequelae care, in Vietnam and Laos. Methodology We conducted a cross-sectional retrospective study using a micro-costing approach from the health system and household perspectives. Out-of-pocket direct medical an…
Estimates of the cost to build a stand-alone environmental surveillance system for typhoid in low- and middle-income countries
The typhoid conjugate vaccine is a safe and effective method for preventing Salmonella enterica serovar Typhi (typhoid) and the WHO’s guidance supports its use in locations with ongoing transmission. However, many countries lack a robust clinical surveillance system, making it challenging to determine where to use the vaccine. Environmental surveillance is one alternative approach to identify ongoing transmission, but the cost to implement such a…
Assessment of the availability of repurposed orphan drugs in India
India has a massive burden of rare diseases (RDs), with an estimated 96 million people living with RDs but limited options for treatment. Repurposing drugs used for other common conditions are essential alternative for RDs due to their cost-effectiveness and reduced timeline. India’s patent regime prevents the evergreening of drugs, and a large generic manufacturing industry provides ample opportunity to explore the potential of repurposed drugs …
Should we allocate more Covid-19 vaccine doses to non-vaccinated individuals
Following the approval by the FDA of two COVID-19 vaccines, which are administered in two doses three to four weeks apart, we simulate the effects of various vaccine distribution policies on the cumulative number of infections and deaths in the United States in the presence of shocks to the supply of vaccines. Our forecasts suggest that allocating more than 50% of available doses to individuals who have not received their first dose can significa…
How Jaminan Kesehatan Nasional (JKN) coverage influences out-of-pocket (OOP) payments by vulnerable populations in Indonesia
While Indonesia introduced a national health insurance scheme (JKN) in 2014 and coverage has grown to over 80% of the population, Indonesians still spend significant sums out-of-pocket (OOP) for their healthcare–over 30% of current health expenditure (CHE). This study aims to better understand how JKN is influencing OOP payments, especially among the poor and rural, at the range of health facilities. This study uses data from the National Socio-E…
Effectiveness of government policies in response to the first Covid-19 outbreak
This paper assesses the quantitative impact of government interventions on deaths related to the first COVID-19 outbreak. Using daily data for 32 countries and relying on the stringency of the conducted policies, we find that the greater the strength of government interventions at an early stage , the more effective these are in slowing down or reversing the growth rate of deaths. School closures have a significant impact on reducing the growth r…
