The Delayed Naming Task, Phonological Preparation Time, and the Three-syllable Stress Window in Spanish
The current study presents the delayed naming task as an effective tool for testing the robustness of phonotactic constraints. A delayed naming task was employed to test for quantity sensitivity among nonwords in Spanish. Results reveal a robust effect of stress modulation by syllable weight as evidenced by differential rates of error between penultimate diphthongs and monophthongs in nonwords marked for antepenultimate stress. Items containing p…
Experience with code-switching modulates the use of grammatical gender during sentence processing
Using code-switching as a tool to illustrate how language experience modulates comprehension, the visual world paradigm was employed to examine the extent to which gender-marked Spanish determiners facilitate upcoming target nouns in a group of Spanish-English bilingual code-switchers. The first experiment tested target Spanish nouns embedded in a carrier phrase ( Experiment 1b ) and included a control Spanish monolingual group ( Experiment 1a ).…
You Saydientito, I Saydentito: Navigating Complex Word Formation in Second Language Spanish
Native speakers seamlessly marshal morphological resources to create new words, displaying striking consistency even where multiple options are available, as when a stem contains a phonological alternation. This is true even when these options appear to be idiosyncratically applied in existing words. For example, in derived words, the alternation of diphthongs and monophthongs in certain Spanish stems defies traditional morphophonological analysi…
Salience Effects: L2 Sentence Production as a Window on L1 Speech Planning
Audiovisual perceptual learning with multiple speakers
One challenge for speech perception is between-speaker variability in the acoustic parameters of speech. For example, the same phoneme (e.g. the vowel in "cat") may have substantially different acoustic properties when produced by two different speakers and yet the listener must be able to interpret these disparate stimuli as equivalent. Perceptual tuning, the use of contextual information to adjust phonemic representations, may be one mechanism …
Tracking multiple inputs: The challenge of bilingual statistical learning
For many learners, language acquisition may entail acquiring more than a single language. Yet to date, much of the research on the fundamental mechanisms of language acquisition has been predicated, at least implicitly, on modeling monolingual acquisition. In this chapter, we explore statistical learning, the ability to track distributional properties of the input, through the lens of multilingual acquisition. This ability is thought to play a cr…
When Gender and Looking Go Hand in Hand: Grammatical Gender Processing In L2 Spanish
In a recent study, Lew-Williams and Fernald (2007) showed that native Spanish speakers use grammatical gender information encoded in Spanish articles to facilitate the processing of upcoming nouns. In this article, we report the results of a study investigating whether grammatical gender facilitates noun recognition during second language (L2) processing. Sixteen monolingual Spanish participants (control group) and 18 English-speaking learners of…
The Syllabification of the Spanish On-Glide: A Behavioral Study
This paper reports the findings of an experiment designed to test the syllabification of on-glides in Spanish by means of a behavioral task. Traditional approaches to Spanish syllabification assume that on-glides are syllabified with the vowel in the nucleus. However, findings from the developmental literature suggest that at least during early stages of acquisition an alternative onset syllabification is possible. The results of the present stud…
Productivity is the Key: Morphophonology and the Riddle of Alternating Diphthongs in Spanish
One of the most enduring problems in Spanish phonology has been the appearance of unstressed diphthongs in words with derivational suffixes. Despite robust conditioning of the diphthong alternation by stress, which predicts monophthongs in such words, derivational suffixes exhibit gradient tolerance for diphthongs. Moreover, speakers' intuitions appear to be keenly sensitive to this variability among suffixes. In this article we present corpus da…

Frenchville French: A case study in phonological attrition
This paper investigates the phonetic and phonological properties of a contracting variety of French spoken in Frenchville, PA, a linguistic enclave community. Specifically, we analyze a pattern of convergence versus preservation that cannot be convincingly explained or understood given current proposals of the process of phonological convergence and attrition in a bilingual contact situation. We demonstrate that our speakers preserve some low lev…
