Temporal trends in African healthcare system capacities in prevention, detection, response, and sustainability between 2010 and 2023
This analysis evaluated self-reported national capacities for prevention, detection, response, and sustainability in 54 African countries from 2013 to 2023 using data from WHO State Party Annual Report (SPAR) submissions. Countries were grouped into five UN-defined regions. Global averages were used as external benchmarks. Four capacity domains were scored using SPAR indicators. Regional and temporal differences were analyzed using ANOVA with Tuk…
Multifactorial Etiology of Adolescent Nicotine Addiction
Nicotine is the primary pharmacologic component of tobacco, and its highly addictive nature is responsible for its widespread use and significant withdrawal effects that result in challenges to smoking cessation therapeutics. Nicotine addiction often begins in adolescence and this is at least partially attributed to the fact that adolescent brain is most susceptible to the neuro-inflammatory effects of nicotine. There is increasing evidence for t…
Neuropsychiatric Adverse Events During 12 Months of Treatment With Efavirenz in Treatment-Naïve HIV-Infected Patients in China
Background: Efavirenz (EFV) is widely used in antiretroviral therapy (ART), but the incidence and risk factors of neuropsychiatric adverse events (NPAEs) after EFV treatment have rarely been studied in Chinese ART naïve patients. Methods: This prospective cohort study assessed HIV-infected patients initiating antiretroviral treatment with EFV to determine prevalence of and factors associated with NPAEs over a 12-month follow-up period using the H…
