Development and validation of the person-centered postnatal care scale for low- and middle-income countries
Inequity in the use of long-lasting insecticidal nets before and after nationwide mass distribution campaign in 48 districts of Uganda
LLIN use level significantly increased following a nationwide distribution campaign. It appears that respondent's relationship with the household head explains most of the variation in LLIN use, while the least wealthy households seem to be dropping off at a faster rate in the use of LLINs following a nationwide distribution campaign. Strategies targeting LLIN use among the most disadvantaged households following a mass distribution campaigns are…
Low Covid-19 vaccine uptake in people living with HIV and those with hypertension and diabetes without HIV at Mbarara and Masaka regional referral hospitals
Chronic diseases such as HIV, hypertension, and diabetes increase the risk of severe coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) and death. Thus, COVID-19 vaccine uptake data among these priority populations are needed to inform immunization programs. We assessed COVID-19 vaccine uptake among people living with HIV (PLWH) and those with hypertension/diabetes without HIV (PWoH) in Southwestern and Southcentral Uganda and determined factors influencing vac…
Association between water insecurity and antiretroviral therapy adherence among pregnant and postpartum women in Greater Accra region of Ghana
Background Adherence to antiretroviral therapy (ART) can substantially reduce morbidity and mortality among women living with HIV (WLWH) and prevent vertical transmission of HIV. However, in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA), more than 50% of new mothers discontinue ART and HIV care after childbirth. The role of water insecurity (WI) in ART adherence is not well-explored. We examined the relationship between WI and ART adherence among pregnant and postpar…
The role of social support in antiretroviral therapy uptake and retention among pregnant and postpartum women living with HIV in the Greater Accra region of Ghana
Our study showed that social support does not play any essential role in ART adherence among the surveyed pregnant and postpartum women. Meanwhile, factors such as having a rival and being under the age of thirty play an instrumental role. The study has signaled the need for ART retention scale-up interventions to have a multi-pronged approach in order to identify the multitude of underlying factors, beyond social support, that enhance/impede eff…
A cluster randomized controlled trial to assess the impact of the ‘Caring for Providers to Improve Patient Experience’ (CPIPE) intervention in Kenya and Ghana
ClinicalTrials.gov: NCT06085105. Protocol version and date: v2-11-07-23
Uptake and perceptions of oral HIV self-testing delivered by village health teams among men in Central Uganda
The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends HIV self-testing (HIVST) to increase access to and utilization of HIV services among underserved populations. We assessed the uptake and perceptions of oral HIVST delivered by Village Health Teams (VHTs) among men in a peri-urban district in Central Uganda. We used a concurrent parallel mixed methods study design and analyzed data from 1628 men enrolled in a prospective cohort in Mpigi district, Cent…
Sex specific differences in HIV status disclosure and care engagement among people living with HIV in rural communities in Kenya and Uganda
Non-disclosure of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) status can hinder optimal health outcomes for people living with HIV (PLHIV). We sought to explore experiences with and correlates of disclosure among PLHIV participating in a study of population mobility. Survey data were collected from 1081 PLHIV from 2015–16 in 12 communities in Kenya and Uganda participating in a test-and-treat trial (SEARCH, NCT#01864603). Pooled and sex-stratified multipl…
Mobility is Associated with Higher-risk Sexual Partnerships Among Both Men and Women in Co-resident Couples in Rural Kenya and Uganda
Population mobility is associated with higher-risk sexual behaviors in sub-Saharan Africa and is a key driver of the HIV epidemic. We conducted a longitudinal cohort study to estimate associations between recent mobility (overnight travel away from home in past six months) or migration (changes of residence over defined geopolitical boundaries) and higher-risk sexual behavior among co-resident couples (240 couples aged ≥ 16) from 12 rural communi…
Self-reported provision of person-centred maternity care among providers in Kenya and Ghana
INTRODUCTION: Person-centred maternity care (PCMC), which refers to care that is respectful and responsive to women's preferences needs, and values, is core to high-quality maternal and child health. Provider-reported PCMC provision is a potentially valid means of assessing the extent of PCMC and contributing factors. Our objectives are to assess the psychometric properties of a provider-reported PCMC scale, and to examine levels and factors asso…
Associations between environmental covariates and temporal changes in malaria incidence in high transmission settings of Uganda
In high-malaria transmission settings, high values of environmental covariates were associated with increased cumulative IRR of malaria, with IRR peaks at variable lag times. The complex associations identified are valuable for designing strategies for early warning, prevention, and control of seasonal malaria surges and epidemics
Factors associated with concurrent wasting and stunting among children 6–59 months in Karamoja, Uganda
Children with concurrent wasting and stunting (WaSt) and children with severe wasting have a similar risk of death. Existing evidence shows that wasting and stunting share similar causal pathways, but evidence on correlates of WaSt remains limited. Research on correlates of WaSt is needed to inform prevention strategies. We investigated the factors associated with WaSt in children 6-59 months in Karamoja Region, Uganda. We examined data for 33,05…
