Lessons Learned from Community Contact Tracing of Women Disengaged from an Urban Prevention of Mother-to-Child Transmission Program in Uganda
Community tracing for disengaged pregnant and post-partum women with HIV(PPWH) shows promise, yet few studies detail the practical challenges of tracing, particularly in the Prevention of Mother-to-Child Transmission programs (PMTCT). Standard guidelines and evidence-based approaches remain lacking. We share lessons from our experiences in tracing disengaged PPWH in an urban PMTCT program in Uganda, where nurse counselors joined outreach teams to…
Public perceptions of Ebola vaccines and confidence in health services to treat Ebola, malaria, and tuberculosis
Uganda used Ebola vaccines as part of its preparedness and response during the 2018–2020 10 th Ebola virus disease (EVD) outbreak in neighboring Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). We evaluated the public’s perceptions of Ebola vaccines and compared their confidence in health services to treat Ebola versus malaria and tuberculosis as part of a survey on Ebola knowledge, attitudes, and practices (KAP) conducted in March 2020. A cross-sectional…
Early observations from the HIV self-testing program among key populations and sexual partners of pregnant mothers in Kampala, Uganda
Background HIV self-testing (HIVST) was adopted for key populations (KPs) and sexual partners of pregnant and lactating women (mothers) in Uganda in October 2018. We report early observations during HIVST implementation in Kampala, Uganda. Methods HIVST was rolled out to reach those with unknown HIV status at 38 public health facilities, using peer-to-peer community-based distribution for female sex workers (FSW) and men who have sex with men (MS…
Low HIV viral suppression rates following the intensive adherence counseling (IAC) program for children and adolescents with viral failure in public health facilities in Uganda
Suppression rates were low among ART-treated children with virological failure that completed the recommended three IAC sessions. As we move towards having 90% of ART-treated children and adolescents achieve and maintain viral suppression, there is need to re-evaluate the implementation of IAC among children and adolescents to consider both psychosocial and biological factors such as resistance testing for those with multiple detectable viral loa…
