  • Maternal Sociodemographic Factors, Adiposity, and Pregnancy Outcomes Among Preterm Deliveries Admitted to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit

Open Access•Mary Clare Lipa, Larske M Soepnel et al.•ARTICLE•Maternal and Child Health Journal•2025

In addition to adiposity, race, ethnicity, and socioeconomic status may be associated with more severe preterm delivery (lower GA). While this exploratory study is limited by the small sample size, our findings highlight the impact of sociodemographic factors on maternal obesity and severity of pregnancy complications in the context of preterm birth with NICU admission

  • Filling the gaps: A community case study in using an interprofessional approach and community-academic partnerships to address Covid-19-related inequities

Open Access•Marisa L Kutchma, DepredadoresAdmin DepredadoresAdmin et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Public Health•2023

Public health challenges rapidly escalated during the COVID-19 pandemic. In response to a severe lack of resources and support in the near western suburbs of Chicago, the COVID Equity Response Collaborative: Loyola (CERCL) was established by an interprofessional team of Loyola University Chicago students, staff, and faculty. CERCL sought to minimize the negative impact of COVID-19 on vulnerable communities, those that are largely Black, Hispanic,…

  • Utility of silhouette showcards to assess adiposity in three countries across the epidemiological transition

Open Access•Tyler O Reese, Pierre Bovet et al.•ARTICLE•PLOS Global Public Health•2022

The Pulvers’ silhouette showcards provide a non-invasive and easy-to-use way of assessing an individual’s body size perception using nine silhouette shapes. However, their utility across different populations has not been examined. This study aimed to assess: 1) the relationship between silhouette perception and measured anthropometrics, i.e., body mass index (BMI), waist circumference (WC), waist-height-ratio (WHtR), and 2) the ability to predic…

  • The associations between alcohol intake and cardiometabolic risk in African-origin adults spanning the epidemiologic transition

Open Access•Danny Baghdan, Lara R Dugas et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2021

While several CM risk factors were associated with alcohol consumption, the associations were inconsistent and varied widely across five international cohorts of African-origin. Future studies should focus on understanding the individual site-related effects
