  • Revising the WHO verbal autopsy instrument to facilitate routine cause-of-death monitoring

Open Access•Jordana Leitao, Daniel Chandramohan et al.•ARTICLE•Global Health Action•2013

OBJECTIVE: Verbal autopsy (VA) is a systematic approach for determining causes of death (CoD) in populations without routine medical certification. It has mainly been used in research contexts and involved relatively lengthy interviews. Our objective here is to describe the process used to shorten, simplify, and standardise the VA process to make it feasible for application on a larger scale such as in routine civil registration and vital statist…

  • Changes in indications for cesarean delivery

Kimberly D Gregory, Sally C Curtin et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Public Health•1998•Cited by: 4•References: 7

OBJECTIVES: The percentages of cesarean deliveries attributable to specific indications (breech, dystocia, fetal distress, and elective repeat cesarean) were computed for 1985 and 1994. METHODS: Data were derived from the 1985 and 1994 National Hospital Discharge Surveys. RESULTS: Dystocia was the leading indication for cesarean delivery in both years. In comparison with 1985, cesareans performed in 1994 that were attributable to dystocia and bre…

  • Birthweight distributions in Mexico City and among US Southwest Mexican Americans

    F C Notzon, Francis Notzon et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Public Health•1992•Cited by: 6•References: 8

In this study birthweight distributions for Mexican Americans and Mexico City were compared. Sharp differences in the two distributions were nearly eliminated by controlling for altitude. The small remaining excess in low birthweight in Mexico City appears to be due to a slight overrepresentation of tertiary hospital deliveries, and possibly to a greater prevalence of pathological conditions. The results are consistent with the favorable low birt…
