  • A Nutritional and Anthropometric Analysis of the Double Burden of Malnutrition in Children Under Two in Madagascar

    Open Access•Rosita Rotella, María Morales‐Suárez‐Varela et al.•ARTICLE•Children•2025

Background : Almost half of all deaths worldwide in children under five are related to malnutrition. Malnutrition encompasses a wide array of nutritional conditions and emerging evidence indicates a growing overlap of these different forms of malnutrition. Nutrimetry, which combines assessments of height-for-age (HAZ) with BMI-for-age (BMIZ) to offer a more integrated assessment of nutritional status, can be particularly useful in low-resource se…

  • Assessment of Stunting and Its Effect on Wasting in Children Under Two in Rural Madagascar

    Open Access•Rosita Rotella, María Morales‐Suárez‐Varela et al.•ARTICLE•Children•2025

Stunting affected over half of the children included in the study (57.4%), but the prevalence of wasting was below what was expected, at 12.4%. In the preliminary speculative analysis using the expected height for age, it was estimated that wasting could possibly affect up to 42.3% of the children. This discrepancy, while it cannot be taken as factual due to the nature of the analysis, could serve as a warning that perhaps the elevated rates of s…

A longitudinal analysis was performed on data from the uniHcos cohort ( n = 1181; 76.7% female). Participants were assessed at university entry (T1) and after 2–3 years (T2). The overall alcohol consumption prevalence remained high and stable (past 30-days alcohol use 76.2% at T1; 76.4% at T2). Binge drinking practice in the past 30 days was als…

  • Constitutional Factors and Irradiation as Risk Factors for Thymoma

Open Access•Linda Kærlev, Mikael Eriksson et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2024

Little is known about the aetiology of thymoma. This study aims to identify medical risk factors for thymoma as a systematic approach to new hypotheses on the aetiology of this disease. A European multi-centre case-control study was conducted from 1995 to 1997, including incident cases aged 35-69 years with thymoma. Altogether, we accepted 85 cases and 3350 controls, of which we interviewed 77 cases and 2071 population controls about constitution…

Our group carried out a study to calculate the presence of malnutrition as wasting, stunting underweight, and BMI-for-age in children presenting in a nutrition center in a rural Ethiopian village in the Oromia region according to WHO guidelines. Our results demonstrated that they had moderate chronic malnutrition or stunting from 1…

    Open Access•María Padilla-Ruiz, María Morales‐Suárez‐Varela et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2022

Colorectal cancer affects men and women alike. Sometimes, due to clinical-pathological factors, the absence of symptoms or the failure to conduct screening tests, its diagnosis may be delayed. However, it has not been conclusively shown that such a delay, especially when attributable to the health system, affects survival. The aim of the present study is to evaluate the overall survival rate of patients with a delayed diagnosis of colorectal canc…

Pregnant women are among the most vulnerable to environmental exposure to tobacco smoke (EET); which has been linked to problems in the mothers' health; one of the most frequent is gestational diabetes (GD). For this reason, there are specific interventions and prevention strategies designed to reduce this exposure risk. However, currently, they are mostly aimed only at aiding the pregnant women with smoking cessation during pregnancy and do not …

  • Alcohol use and family-related factors among Spanish university students

    Open Access•Esperanza Romero‐Rodríguez, Esperanza Romero-Rodríguez et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2022

Risky alcohol consumption in university students is associated with dysfunctional family support, unlike the binge drinking pattern, where there is no such association. The findings of this study show the importance of creating prevention programs focused on the family approach in university students, which include alcohol screening in the population with a family history of this substance, and greater social support from health services
