Recent Hybridization between a Polar Bear and Grizzly Bears in the Canadian Arctic
Grizzly bears have recently become more common on the Arctic Islands in the Inuvialuit Settlement Region, concurrently with a period of environmental change. Over the last decade, grizzly bear – polar bear hybrids have been confirmed within this region, triggering extensive discussion and speculation regarding the impact of hybridization on the parent species. Through harvests, sightings, and captures, we document an increase in the presence of g…
Polar Bear ( Ursus maritimus ) Life History and Population Dynamics in a Changing Climate
There is now an increasing body of scientific evidence that rapid changes in the earth’s climate over the last half-century are influencing the physiology, phenology, distribution, and abundance of species (Hughes, 2000; McCarty, 2001; Stenseth et al., 2002; Root, 2003). As a result, understanding how climate change will affect the distribution and abundance of species has become a major concern in ecology. Among long-lived vertebrates, environme…
Unusual Predation Attempts of Polar Bears on Ringed Seals in the Southern Beaufort Sea
In April and May 2003 through 2006, unusually rough and rafted sea ice extended for several tens of kilometres offshore in the southeastern Beaufort Sea from about Atkinson Point to the Alaska border. Hunting success of polar bears (Ursus maritimus) seeking seals was low despite extensive searching for prey. It is unknown whether seals were less abundant in comparison to other years or less accessible because they maintained breathing holes below…
Polar Bear ( Ursus maritimus ) Denning in the Area of the Simpson Peninsula, Nunavut
The locations of polar bear snow dens in winter on the Simpson Peninsula, Nunavut, and nearby islands to the northwest, and information on the sex and age class of a subsample of the occupants of 73 dens, were recorded from interviews with Inuit hunters at Pelly Bay, at intervals from 1937 to 1965 and 1968 to 1969. Hunting bears at winter dens, after locating them with the assistance of dogs, was legal during that period and was widely practiced …
