  • Patterns of Middle Pleistocene hominin evolution in Africa and the emergence of modern humans

    Open Access•Emma Mbua, Günter Bräuer•CHAPTER•African Genesis•2012

Over the last two decades, different views have emerged on the mode of Middle Pleistocene evolution in Africa, and the origin of modern humans. These mainly range from an evolutionary change within one species Homo sapiens over much of the Middle Pleistocene, to the existence of two or three different species during this time. This chapter presents the results of a new comprehensive study of the Middle and early Late Pleistocene cranial remains b…

“Speciation remains the special case, the less frequent and more elusive phenomenon, often arising by default” (p 164) . 1 Over the last thirty years, great progress has been made regarding our understanding of Homo sapiens evolution in Africa and, in particular, the origin of anatomically modern humans. However, in the mid‐1970s, the whole process of Homo sapiens evolution in Africa was unclear and confusing. At that time it was widely assumed t…

This paper reports on the results of a first computerized tomography (CT)‐based study of the Middle Pleistocene matrix‐filled skull KNM‐ES 11693 from Eliye Springs at Lake Turkana. Ectocranially, the hominid cranium exhibits a remarkable enlargement of the vault symmetrical to the sagittal suture and a porotic surface covering most of the vault. CT analysis further revealed a strong thickening of the cranial vault as well as other relevant aspect…

Regional features play a great role in the analysis of the differentiations of Homo erectus and Homo sapiens. However, this poses the question how widespread and variable these features are. In order to examine this with regard to the features commonly seen in China their occurrence and variability were determined in Chinese as well as in African crania of archaic and late Pleistocene/Holocene modern Homo sapiens. Furthermore, some features known…

Three hominid molars were recovered from a depth of 7.0–7.1 meters in the Mumba Shelter at Lake Eyasi, northern Tanzania. Geological context of the finds and archaeological data indicate that people with a Middle Stone Age technology were using the Mumba locality intermittently whenever retreat of lake waters allowed access to the site. Uranium series dates suggest an age on the order of 130,000 years bp for the teeth and stone tools. Based on mo…

During their expeditions in Northern Tanzania in 1934/38, Ludwig and Margit Kohl‐Larsen (discoverer of Eyasi and Garusi hominids)excavated i. a. the Mumba Rock Shelter. This important excavation yielded human skeletal remains of 18 individuals. The most relevant results of the morphological analyses are presented here. According to the affinities and absolute dating (hominid IX, 3700 B. C. ), the present study supports recent indications of the p…
