  • Can’t Buy Me Love (with Foreign Aid)

    Open Access•John Constantelos, Polly J Diven et al.•ARTICLE•Foreign Policy Analysis•2023•References: 22

Does foreign aid improve the image of donors in recipient countries? Studies have found weak overall effects, but also positive correlations that are highly conditional on donor and recipient factors, like program characteristics and regime type. Our statistical and case study analysis of US foreign aid leads to a more skeptical perspective. We assess the impact of foreign aid on public opinion of the United States in twenty recipient countries d…

  • Vetoes and Venues

    Open Access•John Constantelos•ARTICLE•Canadian Journal of Political…•2014•Cited by: 4•References: 28

This article examines executive responses to economic decline in Ontario and Michigan from 2003 to 2012, when the two governments struggled to adjust to a severe manufacturing crisis which greatly worsened during the Great Recession in 2008–2009. Sharing an international border, these cases offer control over an unusually large number of economic, social and political factors, permitting a focused analysis of the impact of divided government and …

  • Playing the Field

    John Constantelos•ARTICLE•Publius The Journal of Federalism•2010•Cited by: 31•References: 34

Research on interest group strategies in federal systems is converging with the venue shopping and multilevel lobbying literature in the European Union. Drawing on both literatures, the article compares the lobbying strategies of U.S. and Canadian interest groups during the economic crisis of 2008--2009. The impact of political institutional and political partisan factors on venue choice is analyzed in a comparative crucial case study of Michigan…

  • Interest group strategies in multi‐level Europe

    Open Access•John Constantelos•ARTICLE•Journal of Public Affairs•2007•Cited by: 10•References: 20

This article analyzes the political responses of French and Italian business associations to Economic and Monetary Union (EMU) in the EU. I propose and test the empirical relevance of a multi‐level lobbying model for multi‐tiered systems, a model assumed by, but never systematically examined in, the pluralism literature. Data for this ten‐sector cross‐national panel study come from personal interviews with the presidents of French and Italian bus…

  • The Europeanization of interest group politics in Italy

John Constantelos•ARTICLE•Journal of European Public Policy•2004•Cited by: 16

Interest groups have responded to European integration with varied and multi-level adjustment strategies. This article examines the Europeanization of national and regional Italian business associations as they respond to the challenge of EMU and deeper economic integration. A panel survey and analysis of available data indicate that European considerations are plainly evident in interest group goals, strategies, activities, and organization, and…

Bart Kerremans, Andrew Appleton et al.•BOOK•Political Parties and Interest…•2001

This benchmark study of the political party–interest group relationship—crucial in shaping the characteristics of democratic political systems—provides an in-depth analysis of the connection between special interests and political parties across thirteen democracies: Argentina, Britain, the Czech Republic, France, Germany, Israel, Italy, Japan, Mexico, Poland, Spain, Sweden, and the United States.
