  • Early and risky adolescent alcohol use independently predict alcohol, tobacco, cannabis and other drug use in early adulthood in Ireland

Open Access•Margaret M Brennan, Deirdre Mongan et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2025

Age at first alcohol and risky adolescent alcohol use independently predict substance use in early adulthood when considered jointly in extensively adjusted models. These findings highlight the continued urgent need for public health interventions that address factors associated with early alcohol use and support adolescents who use alcohol in a high-risk manner given their elevated risk of progression to more serious substance use as adults

  • Agent-Based Modelling of Mpox Infection Dynamics

Open Access•Hamda Ajmal, Elizabeth Hunter et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Artificial Societies…•2024

Mpox is a viral disease caused by the monkey pox virus (MPXV) of the Poxviridae family. It is similar to smallpox and cowpox. Mpox is not categorized as a sexually transmitted infection, however, most transmission in the recent global outbreak has been attributed to be through men who have sex with men(MSM). Agent-based modelling (ABM) is an effective approach to simulate the spread of Mpox because it enables the detailed representation of hetero…

  • Point of care detection of Sars-CoV-2 antibodies and neutralisation capacity—lateral flow immunoassay evaluation compared to commercial assay to inform potential role in therapeutic and surveillance p…

Open Access•Jonathan McGrath, Laura O’Doherty et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Public Health•2023

Introduction As the COVID-19 pandemic moves towards endemic status, testing strategies are being de-escalated. A rapid and effective point of care test (POCT) assessment of SARS-CoV-2 immune responses can inform clinical decision-making and epidemiological monitoring of the disease. This cross-sectional seroprevalence study of anti-SARS-CoV-2 antibodies in Irish healthcare workers assessed how rapid anti-SARS-CoV-2 antibody testing can be compare…

  • Population Mobility Trends, Deprivation Index and the Spatio-Temporal Spread of Coronavirus Disease 2019 in Ireland

    Open Access•Jamie M Madden, Simon J More et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2021

Like most countries worldwide, the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) has adversely affected Ireland. The aim of this study was to (i) investigate the spatio-temporal trend of COVID-19 incidence; (ii) describe mobility trends as measured by aggregated mobile phone records; and (iii) investigate the association between deprivation index, population density and COVID-19 cases while accounting for spatial and temporal correlation. Standardised incidence…

  • Estimation of the serial interval and proportion of pre-symptomatic transmission events of Covid− 19 in Ireland using contact tracing data

Open Access•Conor G McAloon, Patrick Wall et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2021

Whilst our analysis was based on a large sample size, data were collected for the primary purpose of interrupting transmission chains. Similar to other studies estimating the serial interval, our analysis is restricted to transmission pairs where the infector is known with some degree of certainty. Such pairs may represent more intense contacts with infected individuals than might occur in the overall population. It is therefore possible that our…

  • Numbers of close contacts of individuals infected with Sars-CoV-2 and their association with government intervention strategies

Open Access•Conor G McAloon, Patrick Wall et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2021

We found that the number of contacts per infected case was overdispersed, the mean varied considerable over time and was temporally associated with government interventions. Analysis of the reported number of contacts per individual in contact tracing data may be a useful early indicator of changes in behaviour in response to, or indeed despite, government restrictions. This study provides useful information for triangulating assumptions regardin…
