Association between self-esteem and suicide risk in adolescents from five schools in northern Peru
Evidence on the association between self-esteem and suicide risk (SR) among adolescents in Latin America is limited. To address this gap, we examined this association in secondary school students from northern Peru. We performed an analytical cross-sectional study based on secondary data collected in 2022 from 1,314 adolescents attending 5 secondary schools. SR was assessed using the Plutchik Suicide Risk Scale, while self-esteem was measured wit…
Depression and anxiety in health human resources during the first Covid-19 wave in northern Peru
There is an urgent need for action to address the mental health of these professionals, who have played a critical role in pandemic response and care
Prevalence of post-traumatic stress disorder in Peruvian military
We found that nearly one in ten military personnel presented PTSD. Factors associated with a higher prevalence included longer service time, smoking, insomnia, and fear of COVID-19. Although resilience showed a protective trend in crude analyses, this association was not significant after adjustment
Sleep quality and associated factors in Latin American medical students
It was found that 62.2% of students had poor sleep quality. Factors such as female sex, moderate risk of smoking, and depressive and anxious symptoms were associated with poor sleep quality, while COVID-19 training, history of the disease, and a high level of resilience were linked to better quality. These findings are key for public health, as poor sleep quality affects physical and mental health and academic performance, underscoring the import…
Association between love breakup and suicidal ideation in Peruvian medical students
Our study provides evidence of a significant association between a major love breakup and suicidal ideation. This finding emphasizes the need for further research to better understand this association and inform the development of effective suicide prevention policies in medical education
Resilience, sleep quality and sleepiness in Peruvian medical students
4 out of 10 students presented high levels of resilience. The development of resilience depended on multiple individual and sociodemographic factors. These findings are important to support universities in developing resilience-building measures and strategies that can be implemented to mitigate the adverse pandemic event
Adaptation and altitude sickness
Introduction: We analyze the scientific production and collaboration networks of studies based on adaptation and altitude diseases in the period 1980-2020. Methods: The publications were extracted from journals indexed in Scopus. The bibliometric analysis was used to analyze the scientific production, including the number of annual publications, the documents, and the characteristics of the publications. With the VOSviewer software, the analysis …
Depression, anxiety, and stress in medical students in Peru
Symptoms of depression and anxiety occurred in 7 out of 10 students, and stress in 6 out of 10. Among the factors associated with the presence of anxiety, depression, and stress were eating behavior disorder and not regularly exercising. Periodic evaluations of mental symptomatology are required and counseling should be promoted in medical schools
Depression and anxiety in peruvian military personnel during the pandemic context
We found a prevalence of symptoms of depression and anxiety of 29.9% and 22.0%, respectively. In regard to the factors that attenuate depression, we can mention being married and having resilience; and among the aggravating factors, having a relative with mental health problems, food insecurity, insomnia, and fear of COVID-19. Finally, anxiety increased through working time, insomnia, and fear of COVID-19
A cross-sectional study to assess the level of satisfaction with virtual education in Peruvian medical students
Objectives: Education has totally changed in the context of the pandemic. Therefore, the objective of the present study was to evaluate the factors associated with the level of satisfaction with virtual education in Peruvian medical students during COVID-19. Methods: Analytical and cross-sectional study, based on an online survey of students nationwide. We use previously validated instruments to measure the level of satisfaction and stress (EPP-1…
Mental Health Disturbance after a Major Earthquake in Northern Peru
Little has been studied in Peru on the mental health repercussions after a major earthquake. We aimed to explore the factors associated with depressive and anxiety symptoms in people who experienced a 6.1 magnitude earthquake in Piura, Peru, on 30 July 2021. A preliminary cross-sectional study was conducted in the general population between August-September 2021. An online questionnaire was provided using PHQ-9, GAD-7, and other relevant measures…
Suicide Risk in Military Personnel during the Covid-19 Health Emergency in a Peruvian Region
Military personnel represent a frontline group exposed to multiple stressors. These factors have increased during the COVID-19 pandemic, predisposing to the development of suicidal risk (SR). Given the few studies conducted in this population, we evaluated the prevalence of SR and its associated factors during the health emergency. A cross-sectional survey study was conducted in person among 514 participants in Lambayeque, Peru in 2021. The outco…
Mental Disorders and Level of Resilience in Eight High-Altitude Cities of Peru during the Second Pandemic Wave
COVID-19 has led us to take preventive measures, such as social isolation, to reduce the high transmissibility of the disease. This could have affected the mental health of various population groups and the development of resilience as a mitigator. A cross-sectional analytical study was conducted with 700 participants from eight cities. The dependent variables were depression, anxiety, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). The independent va…
Prevalence and factors associated with food insecurity in eight high-altitude cities in Peru during the second wave of the Covid-19 pandemic
During the pandemic, the prevalence of food insecurity has increased in the Peruvian high-altitude population, revealing the need for preventive strategies. Identification of pandemic-related characteristics that influence food insecurity can guide interventions in at-risk individuals and reduce the long-term impact of this problem on overall health and quality of life
