Dismantling structural inequities in global prevention of childhood and adolescent non-communicable diseases
Non-communicable diseases (NCDs) account for a growing proportion of morbidity and disability among children and adolescents worldwide. Contemporary NCD preventive strategies are predominantly adult-centric, resulting in delayed prevention and widening inequities, particularly in low- and middle-income countries. This neglect reflects a deeper structural and ethical failure, sustained by fragmented financing, siloed governance, commercial determi…
Strategic resource allocation for malaria elimination in endemic settings
Introduction: Malaria remains a significant global health burden, especially in endemic regions where efficient use of limited resources is critical. Economic evaluations provide essential evidence to guide strategic resource allocation and optimise intervention outcomes. This systematic review synthesises recent evidence (2018-2025) on the cost-effectiveness of malaria prevention and treatment interventions in endemic settings. Materials and met…
Adverse childhood experiences and level of self-esteem as predictors for motivation to change among adults with methamphetamine use residing in rehabilitation centers
The study concludes that treatment motivation among methamphetamine users is significantly impacted by parental education, ACE, and sociodemographic variables. Approaches that are trauma-informed, culturally aware, and family-inclusive are essential to improve recovery and participation
The Mediating Role of Familial Support and Religiosity on Youths’ Mental Health and Illicit Drug Use
Although the extent of illicit drug use (IDU) among youths is alarming, there are only a handful of mechanisms that explain the pathway-interactions between IDU and mental health (MH). As such, the present study examines the mediating effects of familial support (FS) and religiosity (R) on IDU among Malaysian youths. Between January 2020 and July 2021, a nationwide interviewer administered face-to-face cross-sectional survey was conducted among 9…
The Challenges and Strategies towards Healthy Eating during Covid-19 Home Confinement Period among Working Adults with BMI ≥ 25 kg/m2 Enrolled in a Weight Loss Program
The COVID-19 pandemic has been affecting our lifestyles, such as work, living, and health. In Malaysia, the Restriction of Movement Order (RMO) was first announced in March 2020 to curb the spread of the virus. Since then, many Malaysians have been confined to their own home. This new lifestyle can cause a change of eating habits where healthy eating may be a challenge. Hence, our qualitative study explored the challenges and strategies for healt…
Prevalence of Drug and Substance Use among Malaysian Youth
Uncontrolled drug and substance use (DSU) may pose unprecedented threats to nation building and a country's socioeconomic development. Despite considerable efforts made and resources used to address DSU concerns, Malaysia has seen a significant annual rise in cases of DSU. The bulk of the reported cases originate from youth between the ages of 15 and 40 years. To date, data related to DSU in Malaysia have been entirely dependent on operation stat…
Identifying the Psychometric Properties of the Malay Version of the WHOQOL-BREF among Employees with Obesity Problem
The Malay version of the WHOQOL-BREF was published approximately 15 years ago. Since then, no known research has been conducted to identify the psychometric properties of the scale using confirmatory factor analysis. This study aimed to establish a model by applying a scientific approach to the translation and adaptation method. The back translation technique was used for the translation process. This cross-sectional study involved 282 employees …
Risk and protective factors of drug abuse among adolescents
Factors Associated with Health-Related Quality of Life amongst Employees in a Malaysian Public University
The current academic landscape has overwhelmed faculties and with demands to adopt tech-savvy teaching modes and accelerate scholarly works, administrative duties, and outreach programs. Such demands have deteriorated the health-related quality of life (HRQoL) among university employees. This study aimed to determine the factors associated with HRQoL among university employees in a Malaysian public university. This cross-sectional study was condu…
Cost-Effectiveness of Colorectal Cancer Genetic Testing
Colorectal cancer (CRC) remains the second leading cause of cancer-related deaths worldwide. Approximately 3-5% of CRCs are associated with hereditary cancer syndromes. Individuals who harbor germline mutations are at an increased risk of developing early onset CRC, as well as extracolonic tumors. Genetic testing can identify genes that cause these syndromes. Early detection could facilitate the initiation of targeted prevention strategies and su…
Mapping the Scientific Landscape of Diabetes Research in Malaysia (2000–2018)
The escalated burden of diabetes on the population's health has catalyzed rigorous scientific research to produce appropriate evidence for treatment and control. Malaysia suffers from the leading diabetes epidemic within the Western Pacific region. It is crucial to map the scientific landscape of diabetes research for the country to identify trends in productivity and determine whether research efforts are directed toward the needs-gaps priority …
Criterion Validity and Psychometric Properties of a Malay Version of the Short Multidimensional Inventory Lifestyle Evaluation-Confinement (SMILE-C) in a Sample of University Staff with Weight Problem…
The aim of this study was to validate the Short Multidimensional Inventory Lifestyle Evaluation-Confinement (SMILE-C) in a Malaysian context. The SMILE-C, which is a respondent-generated instrument, was used to ask participants questions on their lifestyle during the COVID-19 pandemic. The indices of seven sub-scores were then calculated. A total of 121 university staff members completed the Malay version of the SMILE-C as well as instruments for…
Perceived Symptoms of Depression, Anxiety and Stress amongst Staff in a Malaysian Public University
Mental health conditions are a major part of workers' health that predisposes to poor self-motivation for sustaining productivity. This study was aimed to determine the prevalence of depression, anxiety, and stress among staff in a Malaysian public university and its associated factors. A cross-sectional study was conducted among 459 staff from the Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) between April and June 2019. A questionnaire that consisted of…
Quality of life among Jordanian patients on haemodialysis and their caregivers
Results One hundred thirty-eight patients and forty-nine caregivers were involved in the study. Patients’ QOL score was less than their caregiver and both have poorer QOL compared to the general population. Patients’ and caregivers’ Physical Component Summary (PCS) were negatively correlated with their age (patients r=-0.38, P=0.001; caregivers r=-0.37, P=0.008). Moreover, caregivers’ Mental Component Summary (MCS) was negatively correlated with …
Cost analysis of colorectal cancer (CRC) management in UKM Medical Centre using clinical pathway
Background Cost analysis has become a huge concern in today’s healthcare due to the rising healthcare cost and the pressure for policy makers to make appropriate resource allocations. One of the approaches to cost calculation is by activity based costing using clinical pathway. Colorectal cancer (CRC) is fast becoming a threat to an industrialising country like Malaysia due to its rapidly rising incidence trend. Therefore, this study aims to deve…
Periodontal disease as an indicator of chronic non-communicable diseases
Background Periodontal disease has been recognised as a major global public health problem because of its prevalence, economic impact and health consequences. Nevertheless, its burden to the health care system is often largely neglected. Identification of non-communicable diseases which are associated with periodontal disease and understanding of the strengths of the proposed associations is important so that health care providers may identify co…
