  • Perioperative outcomes among older surgical patients with multimorbidity: A longitudinal study from Ethiopia

Open Access•Amanuel Sisay Endeshaw, Fantahun Tarekegn Kumie et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2025

Multimorbidity in older surgical patients was common, and one in ten older patients undergoing major surgery had multimorbidity. Multimorbidity increases the risk of mortality among older patients following major surgery. We recommend targeted management of older surgical patients with multimorbidity by preoperative screening and optimization before surgery

  • Global burden of 288 causes of death and life expectancy decomposition in 204 countries and territories and 811 subnational locations, 1990–2021: A systematic analysis for the Global Burden of Disease…

Open Access•Mohsen Naghavi, Kanyin Liane Ong et al.•ARTICLE•The Lancet•2024

BACKGROUND: Regular, detailed reporting on population health by underlying cause of death is fundamental for public health decision making. Cause-specific estimates of mortality and the subsequent effects on life expectancy worldwide are valuable metrics to gauge progress in reducing mortality rates. These estimates are particularly important following large-scale mortality spikes, such as the COVID-19 pandemic. When systematically analysed, mort…

  • The effect of comorbidity on 28-day perioperative mortality rate among non-cardiac surgical patients in Northwest Ethiopia: A prospective cohort study using propensity score matching

Open Access•Amanuel Sisay Endeshaw, Eshetu Tesfaye Dejen et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2024

This study found a moderate prevalence of comorbid illnesses among non-cardiac surgical patients, with comorbidity increasing the risk of 28-day perioperative mortality. Preoperative screening and optimization are highly recommended for patients with comorbid illness to decrease perioperative mortality rate
