  • Temporal patterns and risk factors of diarrheal comorbidity among children aged < 5 years in rural western Kenya

Open Access•Billy Ogwel, Bryan O Nyawanda et al.•ARTICLE•PLOS Global Public Health•2026

Sub-Saharan Africa bears the highest burden of diarrhea, often complicated by comorbidities that delay diagnosis, hinder treatment, and worsen outcomes. As the epidemiology of diarrheal disease evolves, understanding comorbidity patterns is critical for effective public health responses. We examined the temporal patterns and risk factors of diarrheal comorbidity in Kenyan children aged Shigella surveillance study (2022–2024). The outcome was como…

  • The effects of climatic and non-climatic factors on malaria mortality at different spatial scales in western Kenya, 2008–2019

Open Access•Bryan O Nyawanda, Sammy Khagayi et al.•ARTICLE•BMJ Global Health•2024

BACKGROUND: Malaria mortality is influenced by several factors including climatic and environmental factors, interventions, socioeconomic status (SES) and access to health systems. Here, we investigated the joint effects of climatic and non-climatic factors on under-five malaria mortality at different spatial scales using data from a Health and Demographic Surveillance System (HDSS) in western Kenya. METHODS: We fitted Bayesian spatiotemporal (ze…

  • Forecasting malaria dynamics based on causal relations between control interventions, climatic factors, and disease incidence in western Kenya

Open Access•Bryan O Nyawanda, Simon Kariuki et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Global Health•2024

Background: Malaria remains one of the deadliest diseases worldwide, especially among young children in sub-Saharan Africa. Predictive models are necessary for effective planning and resource allocation; however, statistical models suffer from association pitfalls. In this study, we used empirical dynamic modelling (EDM) to investigate causal links between climatic factors and intervention coverage with malaria for short-term forecasting. Methods…

  • Association between low maternal serum aflatoxin B1 exposure and adverse pregnancy outcomes in Mombasa, Kenya, 2017–2019

Open Access•Eric Osoro, Abigael O Awuor et al.•ARTICLE•Maternal and Child Nutrition•2024

We examined the association between serum aflatoxin B1-lysine adduct (AFB1-lys) levels in pregnant women and adverse pregnancy outcomes (low birthweight, miscarriage and stillbirth) through a nested matched case-control study of pregnant women enroled at ≤28 weeks' gestation in Mombasa, Kenya, from 2017 to 2019. Cases comprised women with an adverse birth outcome, defined as either delivery of a singleton infant weighing <2500 g, or a miscarriage…

  • The cost of care for children hospitalized with respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) associated lower respiratory infection in Kenya

    Open Access•Joyce U Nyiro, Bryan O Nyawanda et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2024

RSV-associated disease among young children leads to a substantial economic burden to both families and the health system in Kenya. This burden may differ between Counties in Kenya and similar multi-site studies are advised to support cost-effectiveness analyses

  • Healthcare-seeking behavior for respiratory illnesses in Kenya

Open Access•Gideon O Emukule, Eric Osoro et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2023

Our findings suggest that hospital-based surveillance captures less than one quarter of severe pneumonia in the community. Multipliers from community household surveys can account for underutilization of healthcare resources and under-ascertainment of severe pneumonia at hospitals

  • Real world external validation of metabolic gestational age assessment in Kenya

Open Access•Steven Hawken, Victoria Ward et al.•ARTICLE•PLOS Global Public Health•2022

Using data from Ontario Canada, we previously developed machine learning-based algorithms incorporating newborn screening metabolites to estimate gestational age (GA). The objective of this study was to evaluate the use of these algorithms in a population of infants born in Siaya county, Kenya. Cord and heel prick samples were collected from newborns in Kenya and metabolic analysis was carried out by Newborn Screening Ontario in Ottawa, Canada. P…

  • Implications of gestational age at antenatal care attendance on the successful implementation of a maternal respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) vaccine program in coastal Kenya

    Open Access•Joyce U Nyiro, Elizabeth A Bukusi et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2020

In a random sample of pregnant women from Kilifi HDSS, Coastal Kenya with card-confirmed ANC clinic attendance, 76.6% would be reached for maternal RSV vaccination within the gestational age window of 28-32 weeks. Widening the vaccination window (26-33 weeks) or (24-36 weeks) would not dramatically increase vaccine coverage and would require consideration of antibody kinetics data that could affect vaccine efficacy

  • Estimates of global seasonal influenza-associated respiratory mortality

Open Access•A Danielle Iuliano, Katherine Roguski et al.•ARTICLE•The Lancet•2018
