  • Exposure behaviour to Escherichia coli among households in Imvepi refugee settlement, Terego district Uganda

Open Access•Aisha Nalugya, John C Ssempebwa et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2024

The study indicates a substantial prevalence of high-risk E. coli exposure behaviours in the refugee settlement.. There's a need to implement behaviour change interventions targeted at preventing or minimizing exposure, especially among households whose heads have low education attainment, those with young caretakers and those with limited knowledge and low-risk perceptions regarding exposure to E. coli

  • Uptake of the hepatitis B vaccine among brothel-based female sex workers in Kampala, Uganda

Open Access•Joana Nakiggala, Mathias Lwenge et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2024

The study revealed a low prevalence of hepatitis B vaccine uptake among FSWs, with less than a tenth completing the three-dose schedule. Therefore, enhancing screening programs, expanding outreach initiatives, and tailoring services to accommodate nontraditional work hours while leveraging peer networks can significantly improve vaccine uptake and reduce hepatitis B transmission in this high-risk population

  • Distribution of Hepatitis B prevention services in Wakiso District, Central Uganda

Open Access•Tonny Ssekamatte, John Bosco Isunju et al.•ARTICLE•PLOS Global Public Health•2023

Hepatitis B Virus (HBV) infection remains a significant global public health challenge especially in low-and-middle income countries. Although there are significant global and national efforts to control Hepatitis B, equitable distribution and access to prevention services such as testing and vaccination remains a challenge. Efforts to increase access are hindered by inadequate evidence on the availability and distribution of HBV services. This c…

BACKGROUND: The Africa One Health University Network (AFROHUN) with support from the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), has since 2012 conducted pre and in-service One health (OH) trainings with the objective of improving global health security. • Effect of community-level intervention on antenatal care attendance: A quasi-experimental study among postpartum women in Eastern Uganda

Open Access•Solomon Tsebeni Wafula, Aisha Nalugya et al.•ARTICLE•Global Health Action•2022

BACKGROUND: Early Initiation of antenatal care (ANC) and at least four visits during pregnancy allow screening and support for a healthy lifestyle and self-care during pregnancy however, community-directed interventions to improve access to these services are rarely explored. OBJECTIVE: To assess the effect of community health worker (CHW) involvement on utilisation of antenatal services during pregnancy in resource-constrained rural settings in …

  • Help-seeking and challenges faced by transwomen following exposure to gender-based violence; a qualitative study in the Greater Kampala Metropolitan Area, Uganda

Open Access•Tonny Ssekamatte, Aisha Nalugya et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal for Equity…•2022

The immediate sources of GBV support services included key population-friendly healthcare facilities and CSOs, police, and friends and family. However, a significant number of transwomen did not report incidences of GBV. Transwomen were discriminated against at some key population healthcare facilities and CSOs, and police, which hindered help-seeking following exposure to GBV. This study highlights the need to tackle internalized stigma and disc…

  • Use of biomass fuels predicts indoor particulate matter and carbon monoxide concentrations; evidence from an informal urban settlement in Fort Portal city, Uganda

    Open Access•Winnifred K Kansiime, Richard K Mugambe et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2022

The cooking and the living areas had high concentrations of PM 2.5 and CO during the cooking time. Cooking with charcoal resulted in higher CO in the living area. Furthermore, cooking outdoors did not have a protective effect against PM 2.5 , and ambient PM 2.5 exceeded the WHO Air quality limits. Interventions to improve the indoor air quality in informal settlements should promote a switch to cleaner cooking energy and improvement in the ambien…

  • Assessment of water, sanitation and hygiene service availability in healthcare facilities in the greater Kampala metropolitan area, Uganda

Open Access•Denis Kayiwa, Richard K Mugambe et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2020

Our findings indicate that provision of water, sanitation, hand hygiene, environmental cleanliness, and health care waste management services within HCFs is largely hindered by structural and performance limitations. In spite of these limitations, it is evident that environmental cleanliness and treatment of infectious waste can be attained with better oversight and dedicated personnel. Attaining universal WASH coverage in HCFs will require delib…
