  • A healthcare-associated outbreak of hepatitis C virus infections attributable to tampering injectable anaesthetic opioids, South Germany, 2017–2018

Open Access•K Schmidt, Stefanie Böhm et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Public Health•2025

Introduction: In October 2018, an outbreak of hepatitis C virus (HCV) in southern Germany was communicated to the Robert Koch Institute (RKI). Healthcare-associated transmission during invasive procedures involving a specific anaesthetist at a Bavarian hospital was suspected. The aim was to conduct a retrospective molecular outbreak investigation in order to elucidate the course of the outbreak. Methods: An exposed patient was defined as a person…

  • Rituximab-Containing Treatment Regimens May Imply a Long-Term Risk for Difficult-To-Treat Chronic Hepatitis E

Open Access•Marten Schulz, Paula Biedermann et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2020

Hepatitis E virus (HEV) infection is an emerging disease in industrialized countries which is usually characterized by a self-limited course. However, there is an increased risk of HEV persistence in immunocompromised risk populations, comprising patients following solid organ transplantation or hematological malignancies. Recently, chronic HEV infection following rituximab-containing treatment regimens has been described. Here we report five pat…

  • Risk behaviours and viral infections among drug injecting migrants from the former Soviet Union in Germany

Open Access•Lineke Derks, Martyna Gassowski et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of Drug…•2018

  • High variability of HIV and HCV seroprevalence and risk behaviours among people who inject drugs

Open Access•Benjamin Wenz, Stine Nielsen et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2016

In the recruited sample of mostly current injectors with a long duration of injecting drug use, seroprevalence for HIV and HCV varied greatly between the city samples. HCV was endemic among participants in all city samples. Our results demonstrate the necessity of intensified prevention strategies for blood-borne infections among PWID in Germany

  • A multicentre sero-behavioural survey for hepatitis B and C, HIV and HTLV among people who inject drugs in Germany using respondent driven sampling

Open Access•Ruth Zimmermann, Ulrich Marcus et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2014

We chose respondent driven sampling for recruitment of participants to improve representativeness of results. Persons, who are not reached by the facility where the study is conducted, are aimed to be included by recruitment through their personal social network of injecting drug users. To reduce differential biases in the questions on knowledge of transmission and prevention of infections, we present true statements on hepatitis B, C and HIV, th…
