  • Durable viral suppression in the dolutegravir era

Open Access•Maria Magdalene Namaganda, Joyce Nakatumba Nabende et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Public Health•2026

Despite widespread rollout of dolutegravir-based (DTG) antiretroviral therapy (ART) in East Africa, viral non-suppression, advanced HIV disease (AHD), and multimorbidity persist, reflecting gaps in service response rather than regimen potency alone. In Uganda’s The AIDS Support Organization (TASO) routine-care cohort (2014–2024; n = 54,348 people living with HIV), integrase inhibitor uptake is near universal, yet AHD remains common, and tuberculo…

  • Decade-long antiretroviral therapy in Uganda

Open Access•Maria Magdalene Namaganda, Stathis Gennatas et al.•ARTICLE•PLOS Global Public Health•2026

The scale-up of antiretroviral therapy (ART) has transformed the HIV epidemic in sub-Saharan Africa, yet longitudinal public health insights from national programmatic cohorts remain scarce. As global targets move toward epidemic control and elimination of virological failure, understanding how profiles and outcomes of people living with HIV (PLWH) evolve in real-world settings is essential. The AIDS Support Organisation (TASO), Uganda’s largest …

  • Coping strategies of school-going adolescents during the Covid-19 pandemic in the climate vulnerable Manafwa watershed, Uganda

Open Access•Charles Batte, Shivan Nuwasiima et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Psychology•2024

During the pandemic, majority of school-going adolescents employed adaptive coping mechanisms, including positive emotional regulation and social support. However, compared to males, females employed resignation more frequently. Moreover, middle-aged adolescents had a greater propensity for negative emotion copying. Findings from this study contribute valuable information for the development of targeted interventions and support mechanisms for ad…

  • Prevalence and factors contributing to mental health challenges among school-going adolescents

Open Access•Charles Batte, Pamela Okwir Apio et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2024

The prevalence of mental health challenges among students was high with majority having anxiety and disruptive behaviour. Adolescents from families with more than five children and those with substance abuse were more likely to have mental health challenges. We therefore recommend that various stakeholders such as the Ministry of Health, and the Ministry of Education, design a curriculum that caters to the mental health needs of children. Family …

  • Cross-sectional validation of the COPD Assessment Test (CAT) among chronic obstructive pulmonary disease patients in rural Uganda

Open Access•Charles Batte, Andrew Weil Semulimi et al.•ARTICLE•PLOS Global Public Health•2023

Measuring quality of life is a key component in the management of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD). The COPD assessment test (CAT), an easy to administer and shorter instrument than the standard Saint George’s respiratory questionnaire (SGRQ), could be an alternative tool for measuring the quality of life of COPD patients in rural Uganda. A cross-sectional study was conducted between June and August 2022, consecutively recruiting 113 …

  • Acceptability of patient-centered hypertension education delivered by community health workers among people living with HIV/Aids in rural Uganda

Open Access•Charles Batte, John Mukisa et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2021

Hypertension patient-centered education delivered by CHWs using the PocketDoktorTM was acceptable to PLWHA and hypertension in Nakaseke area in rural, Uganda. There is need for further studies to determine the cost implications of delivering this intervention among PLWHA across LMIC settings

  • Households experiencing catastrophic costs due to tuberculosis in Uganda

Open Access•Winters Muttamba, Racheal Tumwebaze et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2020

Despite free health care in public health facilities, over half of Ugandan TB affected households experience catastrophic costs. Roll out of social protection interventions like TB assistance programs, insurance schemes, and enforcement of legislation related to social protection through multi-sectoral action plans with central NTP involvement would palliate these costs
