  • Molecular Epidemiology of Antibiotic Resistance Genes and Virulence Factors in Multidrug-Resistant Escherichia coli Isolated from Rodents, Humans, Chicken, and Household Soils in Karatu, Northern Tanz…

Open Access•Valery Silvery Sonola, Abdul Katakweba et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2022

The interaction of rodents with humans and chicken in the household environment can facilitate transmission of multidrug-resistant (MDR) Escherichia coli ( E. coli ), causing infections that are difficult to treat. We investigated the presence of genes encoded for carbapenem, extended spectrum beta-lactamases (ESBL), tetracycline and quinolones resistance, and virulence among 50 MDR E. coli isolated from human ( n = 14), chicken ( n = 12), rodent…

  • Occurrence of Multidrug-Resistant Staphylococcus aureus among Humans, Rodents, Chickens, and Household Soils in Karatu, Northern Tanzania

Open Access•Valery Silvery Sonola, Gerald Misinzo et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2021

We conducted this study to investigate the isolation frequency and phenotypic antibiotic resistance pattern of Staphylococcus aureus isolated from rodents, chickens, humans, and household soils. Specimens were plated onto mannitol salt agar (Oxoid, Basingstoke, UK) and incubated aerobically at 37 °C for 24 h. Presumptive colonies of S. aureus were subjected to Gram staining, as well as catalase, deoxyribonuclease (DNAse), and coagulase tests for …

    Open Access•Zuhura I Kimera, Fauster X Mgaya et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2021

We conducted environmental surveillance of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) bacteria in the Msimbazi river basin in Tanzania to determine the occurrence of extended-spectrum β-lactamase (ESBL)-producing, carbapenem resistant Enterobacteriaceae (CRE) and quinolone resistant Escherichia coli and Klebsiella spp. A total of 213 Enterobacteriaceae isolates were recovered from 219 samples. Out of the recovered isolates, 45.5% ( n = 97) were Klebsiella pn…

  • High prevalence of human immunodeficiency virus, hepatitis B and C viral infections among people who inject drugs: A potential stumbling block in the control of HIV and viral hepatitis in Tanzania

Open Access•Rahim H Kawambwa, Mtebe Majigo et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2020

Over two-third of PWID had serologic evidence of infection with at least one virus while 22.4% having at least two infections. The high prevalence of HIV and viral hepatitis infections among PWID may hamper initiatives of ending HIV and viral hepatitis epidemics in Tanzania

  • Prevalence of HIV and syphilis infections among pregnant women attending antenatal clinics in Tanzania, 2011

Open Access•Joel Manyahi, Boniphace S Jullu et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2015

The overall prevalence of HIV infection (5.6 %) and syphilis (2.5 %) found among pregnant women attending ANC clinics in Tanzania calls for further strengthening of current intervention measures, which include scaling up the integration of prevention of mother to child transmission (PMTCT) services in Reproductive and Child Health (RCH) clinics

  • Neonatal sepsis at Muhimbili National Hospital, Dar es Salaam, Tanzania; aetiology, antimicrobial sensitivity pattern and clinical outcome

Open Access•Tumaini Mhada, Tumaini V Mhada et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2012

Staphylococcus aureus was predominant isolate followed by Klebsiella and Escherichia coli. There was high resistance to ampicillin and cloxacillin. Mortality rate due to neonatal sepsis was high in our setting. Routine antimicrobial surveillance should guide the choice of antibiotics for empirical treatment of neonatal sepsis

  • Maternal and neonatal colonisation of group B streptococcus at Muhimbili National Hospital in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania: Prevalence, risk factors and antimicrobial resistance

Open Access•Agricola Joachim, Mecky Matee et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2009

Our findings seem to suggest that a quarter of pregnant women attending ANC clinic at MNH and approximately 10% of their newborns are colonised with GBS. All isolates were found to be sensitive to vancomycin and ampicillin which seem to be the most effective antibiotics for the time being. However there is a need for continuous antibiotics surveillance of GBS to monitor trend of resistance. The high isolation frequency of GBS among pregnant women…

  • Brine Shrimp Toxicity Evaluation Of Some Tanzanian Plants Used Traditionally For The Treatment Of Fungal Infections

Open Access•Mainen J Moshi, MJ Moshi et al.•ARTICLE•African Journal of Traditional…•2008

Plants which are used by traditional healers in Tanzania have been evaluated to obtain preliminary data of their toxicity using the brine shrimps test. The results indicate that 9 out of 44 plant species whose extracts were tested exhibited high toxicity with LC50 values below 20μg/ml. These include Aloe lateritia Engl. (Aloaceae) [19.1μg/ml], Cassia abbreviata Oliv. (Caesalpiniaceae) [12.7μg/ml], Croton scheffleri Pax (Euphorbiaceae) [13.7μg/ml]…

  • Sputum microscopy for the diagnosis of HIV-associated pulmonary tuberculosis in Tanzania

Open Access•Mecky Matee, Lillian Mtei et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2008

Sputum microscopy on 3 expectorated sputum specimens will only detect 55% of culture positive HIV-infected patients in active screening for pulmonary tuberculosis. Sensitivity is higher in patients with greater numbers of CFUs in the sputum. Culture is required for active case finding of HIV- associated pulmonary tuberculosis

  • Hepatitis A, B and C viral co-infections among HIV-infected adults presenting for care and treatment at Muhimbili National Hospital in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania

Open Access•Tumaini Nagu, Tumaini J Nagu et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2008

There is high prevalence of markers for hepatitis B and C infections among HIV infected patients seeking care and treatment at MNH. Clinical features and a raise in serum alanine aminotransferase were of limited predictive values for the viral co-infections. Efforts to scale up HAART should also address co-infections with Hepatitis B and C viruses

  • High potential of escalating HIV transmission in a low prevalence setting in rural Tanzania

    Open Access•Khadija I Yahya-Malima, Mecky Matee et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2007

The HIV prevalence from the general population was comparable to that of pregnant women attending antenatal clinics. The revealed patterns of sexual risk behaviours, for example, close to 50% of men having multiple partners and 78% of the population have never used a condom; it is likely that HIV infection will rapidly escalate. Immediate and effective preventive efforts that consider the socio-cultural contexts are necessary to reduce the spread…

  • Seroprevalence of hepatitis B and C viral co-infections among children infected with human immunodeficiency virus attending the paediatric HIV care and treatment center at Muhimbili National Hospital …

Open Access•Safila P Telatela, Mecky Matee et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2007

The high seroprevalence (15%) of hepatitis co-infection in HIV infected children attending the Paediatrics HIV CTC at the MNH calls for routine screening of hepatitis viral co-infection and modification in the management of HIV infected children

  • Prevalence of enteropathogenic viruses and molecular characterization of group A rotavirus among children with diarrhea in Dar es Salaam Tanzania

Open Access•Sabrina J Moyo, Gro Njølstad et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2007

Nearly one third of children with diarrhea admitted to hospitals in Dar es Salaam had one of the four viral agents. The predominance of rotavirus serotype G9 may have implication for rotavirus vaccination in Tanzania

  • The silent HIV epidemic among pregnant women within rural Northern Tanzania

    Open Access•Khadija I Yahya-Malima, Bjørg Evjen Olsen et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2006

Including rural remote sites, as part of the national ANC routine surveillance, is crucial in order to discover imminent silent epidemics such as the one described in this paper. Scaling up HIV prevention efforts is mandatory to prevent the imminent escalation of the HIV epidemic highly associated with a history of sexually transmitted infections (STIs), multiple sexual partners and pregnancies at a younger age. Ignorance of relevant knowledge an…

  • Antifungal activity of some Tanzanian plants used traditionally for the treatment of fungal infections

    Open Access•Omar J M Hamza, Omar JM Hamza et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Ethnopharmacology•2006
