  • An Updated History of Pre-Contact New England

    Open Access•J E Watson•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•2020•Cited by: 1•References: 6

Faunal assemblages from the pre-Contact period sites Frisby-Butler and Hornblower II on Marthaʼs Vineyard, Massachusetts, USA, remain unstudied since excavation during the 1980s. This project establishes radiocarbon ( 14 C) dates from faunal remains and evaluates occupation and abandonment at each site. 14 C measurements were collected from 17 specimens and 13 dates from previous analyses were re-examined. Dates were identified from the archaeolo…

  • A reevaluation of bird taxonomic identifications at Contact‐ and historic‐era North American sites

    Open Access•J E Watson, H Ledogar•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2019•References: 22

Domestic chickens ( Gallus domesticus ) and turkeys ( Meleagris gallopavo ) are identified more frequently than other bird species in bone assemblages from historic sites in North America. Recent studies on the effectiveness of metric data for identification of galliform bones found high degrees of similarity in size and morphology between wild game birds (e.g., grouse and ptarmigan) and multiple domestic or introduced species (e.g., chicken and …

  • Testing the effectiveness of osteometrics in the identification of North American gallinaceous bird post-cranial elements

  • Can metric data be an effective tool for galliform skull identification in archaeological contexts

  • Evaluating Native American Bird Use and Bird Assemblage Variability along the Oregon Coast

    Kristine M Bovy, M L Mo et al.•ARTICLE•The Journal of Island and Coastal…•2018•Cited by: 1•References: 14

Native American use of birds on the Oregon coast is not well known and has never been synthesized to present a regional understanding. We rectify this by analyzing data from 26 zooarchaeological assemblages, including three previously unpublished bird assemblages: Umpqua/Eden (35DO83), Whale Cove (35LNC60), and the Dunes Site (35CLT27). We employ a series of non-parametric randomization tests to directly evaluate patterns of taxonomic diversity, …

  • Archaeological Investigations at Priory Close, Northallerton, North Yorkshire

    M J Randerson, J E Watson et al.•ARTICLE•Yorkshire Archaeological Journal•2015•Cited by: 1•References: 4

The remains of part of a Carmelite Priory were investigated at Priory Close, Northallerton, North Yorkshire, in advance of a residential development. Two buildings belonging to the Priory were uncovered. A structure interpreted as the east side of the cloister was exposed, surrounded by elements of the south and east ranges. Eight well-preserved burials were excavated from the area of the cloister. The buildings of the east range may have include…

  • Early Anglian Catterick and Catraeth

    Peter R Wilson, Peter Cardwell et al.•ARTICLE•Medieval Archaeology•1996•Cited by: 2•References: 17

The evidence from scattered excavations undertaken over several decades in Catterick is brought together and assessed. The evidence of both settlement and burial indicates activity in the early Anglian period. Indications of status and ethnicity are discussed, and set within their historical context
