  • Association of individual and community-level socioeconomic status and education with medication use: A multilevel analysis in the Persian cohort

Open Access•Mohammadreza Akbari, Hossein Poustchi et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2025

Higher education was associated with lower medication use, whereas living in more educated communities was linked to higher usage. Although the association between individual SES and medication use was relatively weak, residing in middle-SES communities was associated with lower medication usage. These findings show the importance of addressing community-level factors in health research and policymaking

  • Worldwide trends in underweight and obesity from 1990 to 2022: A pooled analysis of 3663 population-representative studies with 222 million children, adolescents, and adults

    Open Access•Nowell H Phelps, Rosie Singleton et al.•ARTICLE•The Lancet•2024

BACKGROUND: Underweight and obesity are associated with adverse health outcomes throughout the life course. We estimated the individual and combined prevalence of underweight or thinness and obesity, and their changes, from 1990 to 2022 for adults and school-aged children and adolescents in 200 countries and territories. METHODS: ). For school-aged children and adolescents, we report thinness (BMI 2 SD above the median). FINDINGS: From 1990 to 20…

  • Socioeconomic and environmental factors associated with waterpipe tobacco smoking among Iranian adults: A Persian cohort-based cross-sectional study

Open Access•Telma Zahirian Moghadam, Hamed Zandian et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2023

There is a clear socioeconomic inequality in WTS, with a higher prevalence among adults with higher income and education. The findings suggest the need for targeted interventions to address this inequality and reduce the prevalence of WTS among high-income communities

  • Seroprevalence of Sars-CoV-2 antibody among urban Iranian population: Findings from the second large population-based cross-sectional study

Open Access•Mohammad Zamani, Hossein Poustchi et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2022

Nearly one in three individuals were exposed to SARS-CoV-2 in the studied cities by March 2021. The seroprevalence increased about two-fold between April, 2020, and March, 2021

  • Socioeconomic inequalities in prevalence, awareness, treatment and control of hypertension: Evidence from the Persian cohort study

Open Access•Mahin Amini, Mahdi Moradinazar et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2022

The prevalence of HTN was higher among low-SES individuals, who also showed higher levels of awareness. However, treatment and control of HTN were more concentrated among those who had higher levels of SES, indicating that people at a higher risk of adverse event related to HTN (the low SES individuals) are not benefiting from the advantage of treatment and control of HTN. Such a gap between diagnosis (prevalence) and control (treatment and contr…

  • Worldwide trends in hypertension prevalence and progress in treatment and control from 1990 to 2019: A pooled analysis of 1201 population-representative studies with 104 million participants

    Open Access•Bin Zhou, Rodrigo M Carrillo-Larco et al.•ARTICLE•The Lancet•2021

BACKGROUND: Hypertension can be detected at the primary health-care level and low-cost treatments can effectively control hypertension. We aimed to measure the prevalence of hypertension and progress in its detection, treatment, and control from 1990 to 2019 for 200 countries and territories. METHODS: We used data from 1990 to 2019 on people aged 30-79 years from population-representative studies with measurement of blood pressure and data on blo…

  • Height and body-mass index trajectories of school-aged children and adolescents from 1985 to 2019 in 200 countries and territories: A pooled analysis of 2181 population-based studies with 65 million p…

    Open Access•Andrea Rodriguez-Martinez, Andrea Rodriguez‐Martinez et al.•ARTICLE•The Lancet•2020

BACKGROUND: Comparable global data on health and nutrition of school-aged children and adolescents are scarce. We aimed to estimate age trajectories and time trends in mean height and mean body-mass index (BMI), which measures weight gain beyond what is expected from height gain, for school-aged children and adolescents. METHODS: For this pooled analysis, we used a database of cardiometabolic risk factors collated by the Non-Communicable Disease …

  • Socioeconomic gradient in physical activity: Findings from the Persian cohort study

Open Access•Ali Kazemi Karyani, Behzad Karmi Matin et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2019

The higher prevalence of PPA among Iranian adults, especially, women and older adults, warrant further public health attention. Since PPA is concentrated more among the high-SES population in Iran, strategies for the promotion of physical activity should focus more on economically well-off population
