  • The Radical Traditional: Polarisation and authoritarianism

Sarah L Macmillen, Matthew T Loveland et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Psychosocial Studies•2026

The contemporary religious landscape has seen an uptick in religious nationalism, rightist politics and other phenomena related to what prominent social thinkers Charles Taylor and Michele Dillon have called the ‘post-secular’. This article briefly summarises continuing research on such a branch of Catholic practice, known as Radical Traditionalism. Embracing pre-modern notions of ritual and related expressions of Catholicism, ‘Rad-Trads’ are inc…

  • Judging Deliberation: An Assessment of the Crowdsourced Icelandic Constitutional Project

Open Access•Delia Popescu, Matthew T Loveland et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Deliberative Democracy•2022

This study explores deliberation as a lived experience between individuals engaged in putatively deliberative practices. While face-to-face deliberation is well documented, there are fewer empirical studies that address its online counterpart. The authors review current theoretical conceptualizations and operationalize a measure of deliberation, and then apply the measure to the case of the debate fostered by the Constitutional Council online pub…

  • Prosocial skeptics: Skepticism and generalized trust

    Open Access•Matthew T Loveland, Alexander G Capella et al.•ARTICLE•Critical Research on Religion•2017•Cited by: 3•References: 34

We report on a study of the religious correlates of generalized trust. Our critical frame leads us to explore novel questions about how nonreligion may encourage social trust. We find that those who believe the bible to be a book of fables are more trusting than those with other beliefs about the text, and that nontheists report a greater willingness to trust. We discuss the implications of our findings for future research about religious belief …

  • The Gypsy Threat Narrative: Explaining Anti-Roma Attitudes in the European Union

    Open Access•Matthew T Loveland, Delia Popescu•ARTICLE•Humanity & Society•2016•Cited by: 16•References: 34

In this study, we analyze European attitudes about the Roma. These attitudes are important because they encourage or impede the full inclusion of the Roma in European society. We articulate what we refer to as the Gypsy Threat Narrative and use it to motivate an empirical analysis of how comfortable Europeans are with Roma neighbors, as expressed in a 2008 Eurobarometer survey. We use mixed ordinary least square regression models to account for t…

  • Shepherds and Sheep: Parish Reconfiguration, Authority, and Activism in a Catholic Diocese

    Open Access•Matthew T Loveland, Margret Ksander•ARTICLE•Review of Religious Research•2014•Cited by: 1•References: 11

This mixed method study describes contention over parish reconfiguration in a northeast Catholic diocese, and a case study of one merged parish. Guided by social movement theories about collective action frames and political opportunities in mobilization, we outline the diocesan frame of reconfiguration and the counter frame developed by activists who organized to oppose the process. While the diocesan frame focused on a shortage of priests that …

  • Befriending the 'Other: Patterns of Social Ties between the Religious and Non-Religious

    Open Access•Nicholas Vargas, Matthew T Loveland•ARTICLE•Sociological Perspectives•2011•Cited by: 10•References: 41

Aside from the literature on inter-racial and cross-sex relationships, few studies have examined the determinants of relationships that cross social boundaries. The authors contribute to this literature by considering the social boundary between the religious and the non-religious. Surveys of U.S. adults provide evidence of popular aversion toward the non-religious, but this analysis of the Baylor Religion Survey (2005) shows that the majority of…

  • The Radius of Trust: Religion, Social Embeddedness and Trust in Strangers

    M R Welch, Michael Welch et al.•ARTICLE•Social Forces•2007•Cited by: 62

Data from the 2002 Religion and Public Activism Survey were used to examine relationships among measures of religious orientation, embeddedness in social networks and the level of trust individuals direct toward others. Results from ordered logistic regression analysis demonstrate that Catholics and members of other denominations show significantly less trust in strangers than mainline Protestants, while older persons and those who are more trust…

  • Private Prayer and Civic Involvement

Open Access•Matthew T Loveland, David Sikkink et al.•ARTICLE•Journal for the Scientific Study…•2005•Cited by: 34•References: 23

We analyze the relationship between private prayer and participation in voluntary association. We argue that prayer fosters a cognitive connection to the needs of others, and thus promotes membership in associations that emphasize personal relationships. Private prayer is not related to membership in political groups. The effect of prayer is strengthened by membership in religious groups, suggesting the relevance of both organizational and devoti…

  • Religious Switching: Preference Development, Maintenance, and Change

    Open Access•Matthew T Loveland•ARTICLE•Journal for the Scientific Study…•2003•Cited by: 44•References: 24

Up to one-third of Americans switch religions at some time during their lives. What are the predictors of this religious mobility? This article addresses this question using a modified rational choice framework to explain the development, maintenance, and change of religious preferences. Although classical rational choice theory assumes that preferences are stable, this article suggests that preferences are variable and that social interaction wo…
