Perinatal care in Sars-CoV-2 infected women
Despite the rising trend in the studied indicators, we observed concerning substandard childbirth care during the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic. Continued efforts are necessary to underscore the significance of the experience of care as a vital component in enhancing the quality of family-centred care policies
Management of Breast Abscess during Breastfeeding
(1) Background: Breast abscess (BA) is a condition leading in the majority of cases to breastfeeding interruption. Abscesses are commonly treated with antibiotics, needle aspiration or incision and drainage (I&D), but there is still no consensus on the optimal treatment. Since there are no well-defined clinical guidelines for abscess management, we conducted a retrospective, observational study with the aim of assessing ultrasound (US)-guided man…
Maternal and Neonatal Morbidity and Mortality Among Pregnant Women With and Without Covid-19 Infection
Importance: Detailed information about the association of COVID-19 with outcomes in pregnant individuals compared with not-infected pregnant individuals is much needed. Objective: To evaluate the risks associated with COVID-19 in pregnancy on maternal and neonatal outcomes compared with not-infected, concomitant pregnant individuals. Design, Setting, and Participants: In this cohort study that took place from March to October 2020, involving 43 i…
Childbirth Care among Sars-CoV-2 Positive Women in Italy
The new coronavirus emergency spread to Italy when little was known about the infection's impact on mothers and newborns. This study aims to describe the extent to which clinical practice has protected childbirth physiology and preserved the mother-child bond during the first wave of the pandemic in Italy. A national population-based prospective cohort study was performed enrolling women with confirmed SARS-CoV-2 infection admitted for childbirth…
Evolving treatment implementation among HIV–infected pregnant women and their partners
BACKGROUND: The current global and national indications for antiretroviral treatment (ART, usually triple combination therapy) in adolescent and adults, including pregnant women, recommend early ART before immunologic decline, pre-exposure chemoprophylaxis (PrEP), and treatment of HIV-negative partners in serodiscordant couples. There is limited information on the implementation of these recommendations among pregnant women with HIV and their par…
Multiple‐micronutrient supplementation
Micronutrient deficiencies during pregnancy pose important challenges for public-health, given the potential adverse outcomes not only during pregnancy but across the life-course. Provision of iron-folic acid (IFA) supplements is the strategy most commonly practiced and recommended globally. How to successfully implement IFA and multiple micronutrient supplementation interventions among pregnant women and to achieve sustainable/permanent solution…
Relevance of European alignment for micronutrients' recommendation regarding pregnant and lactating women, infants, children and adolescents
The European Commission (EC) recognized in 2005 the call for a Network of Excellence on ‘nutrient status and requirements of specific vulnerable population groups’, in order to harmonize micronutrient recommendations across Europe as a result of the considerable variations within the European countries (Doets et al. 2008). These large disparities in micronutrient intake recommendations are attributed to different approaches, lack of transparency …
