  • Multiple social positions and well-being among Nordic adolescents

Open Access•Jasmine Gustafsson, Hanna Konttinen et al.•ARTICLE•Social Science & Medicine•2026

BACKGROUND: Research on well-being inequalities has typically examined the independent effects of social positions, often overlooking how the interplay of multiple social categorizations can shape well-being outcomes. This study explored how multiple social positions based on gender, age, immigrant background, family structure, and perceived family socioeconomic status shape patterns of inequality in three well-being outcomes-psychosomatic compla…

  • Associations between eating habits and mental health among adolescents in five nordic countries

    Open Access•Anne-Siri Fismen, Anne‐Siri Fismen et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2024

Eating habits should be considered when promoting mental health in the adolescent population. While gender differences and cross-country variations exist, even minor enhancements in eating behaviors could yield meaningful benefits

  • Sixteen-year trends in adolescent consumption of sugar-sweetened soda in six European countries with a soda tax and comparison countries

Open Access•Angeline Chatelan, Manon Rouche et al.•ARTICLE•Public Health Nutrition•2023

Objective: To examine changes in the proportions of daily, weekly and occasional consumers of sugar-sweetened soda in six European countries that introduced/updated a tax between 2001–2002 and 2017–2018 and in neighbouring comparison countries (without a tax). Design: Repeated cross-sectional surveys. Setting: Health Behaviour in School-aged Children study, spanning five survey years (school years 2001–2002 to 2017–2018). Participants: Nationally…

  • Nordic adolescents responding to demanding survey scales in boring contexts

Open Access•Leif Edvard Aarø, Anne‐Siri Fismen et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Adolescence•2022

INTRODUCTION: Straightlining, or identical responses across all items within a multi-item scale, is often taken as an indication that responses to all items in a questionnaire are of poor quality. The purpose of this study was to examine straightlining on two scales: The Sense of Unity Scale (SUS) and the short version of the Warwick-Edinburgh Mental Well-being Scale (SWEMWBS). METHODS: Data stem from the 2017-2018 data collections in four Nordic…

  • Cross-national variation in the association between family structure and overweight and obesity

    Open Access•Anne‐Siri Fismen, Otto R F Smith et al.•ARTICLE•SSM - Population Health•2022

The study indicates that living in a one-parent family, as well as living together with grandparents, are associated with overweight and obesity among adolescents, particularly in the Nordic European region. Existing welfare policies may be insufficient to eliminate inequalities related to family structure differences

  • Trends in prevalence of overweight and obesity among South African and European adolescents

    Open Access•Emmanuel Nwosu, Anne-Siri Fismen et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2022

Our study shows that by 2016, the prevalence of adolescent obesity was high in South Africa - more than 1 in 5 adolescents - which is nearly similar to that in Europe, yet South African girls may be at a greater odd for overweight and obesity in contrast to Europe, as well as adolescents from high earning families. South African local and contextual factors may be driving higher prevalence in specific sub-population. Our study also shows the need…

  • Family affluence and cultural capital as indicators of social inequalities in adolescent’s eating behaviours

    Open Access•Anne-Siri Fismen, Anne‐Siri Fismen et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2012

Material capital and cultural capital individually and independently contributed to the prediction of healthy eating patterns among adolescents in Norway. Cultural capital is an understudied dimension of the socio-economic status concept and the influence on health behaviour needs to be explored in future studies. Initiatives to promote healthy eating should focus on education, habits and consciousness of a healthy diet, but also at reducing the …
