Sex-stratified mortality trends in preterm birth complications in Sierra Leone
Background Preterm birth complications remain a leading cause of neonatal mortality in Sierra Leone, despite recent health system gains. Evidence on long-term sex-specific disparities in mortality due to preterm birth complications is limited, constraining equitable neonatal care planning. Objective To examine two‐decade trends in sex‐stratified mortality from preterm birth complications using standardized equity indicators. Methods We conducted a …
Trends in condom use and its socioeconomic inequalities among men in Sierra Leone for HIV prevention, 2008-2019
INTRODUCTION: Health equity is a central objective of global health, requiring the removal of barriers to ensure equitable access and use of services for all. Monitoring inequalities in health service use is critical to evaluate progress toward this goal. This study analyses longitudinal trends in condom use, a key HIV prevention service and the associated socioeconomic inequalities among men in Sierra Leone to assess whether access and use are b…
From outbreak to opportunity
The 2025 clade IIb mpox outbreak in Sierra Leone, intersecting with a significant HIV burden, is not merely a health crisis but a stark manifestation of deep-seated global health inequities. This commentary argues that the response to this outbreak reveals a familiar and fatal pattern: the neglect of diseases within marginalized populations until they threaten high-income countries. Through analyzing disparities in clinical outcomes, diagnostic a…
Designing equity-focused sanitation policies in Sub-Saharan Africa
Open defecation in Sub-Saharan Africa is overwhelmingly concentrated in rural populations, making inequity, not simply low coverage, the central barrier to achieving SDG 6.2. Integrating simple equity metrics such as D, R, PAR, and PAF into national monitoring systems can help governments identify priority populations, estimate potential gains from reducing disparities, and target investments more efficiently and fairly. Equity-focused sanitation…
Quantifying the attributable burden of economic inequality on under-five mortality across ten African countries
Up to 45% of under-five deaths in high-burden African countries are attributable to economic inequality. Embedding equity metrics into child survival strategies and targeting the poorest households are essential to accelerate progress toward ending preventable child deaths. Precision public health targeting the poorest quintiles is crucial to reducing preventable child deaths in Africa
Impact of the Covid-19 pandemic on regional and national uptake of HIV testing services in Sierra Leone
Our study shows that HIV testing was significantly disrupted during the COVID-19 pandemic but recovered quickly after the pandemic. These findings highlight that lessons learned from previous epidemics may influence adaptive strategies to maintain essential health services during public health emergencies
