Impact evaluation of a population-based ‘Screen and Treat for Anaemia Reduction (STAR)’ strategy
INTRODUCTION: Population level screen and treat approach for anaemia reduction could be beneficial but its feasibility and impact remains to be tested. METHODS: This cluster randomised trial in rural Telangana included 14 clusters randomised (1:1) to either intervention or control arms. A cluster included all participants (6 months to 50 years) served by a frontline health worker. In the intervention arm, participants were screened for anaemia at…
Milk Adulteration in Delhi- NCR
Milk has a history of being advertised as a superfood and an essential in an average Indian’s day. Over the years, the quality of milk is degrading due to mixing of any substance that is inferior in quality but promises better profits. This process is adulteration of the milk and has become quite common in India. In actuality, within the realm of food products, milk stands out as particularly susceptible to adulteration, hence posing significant …
The Electoral Bonds Dilemma
The concept of electoral bonds offers a difficult conundrum at the junction of fair elections and political finance openness. Originally meant to simplify political contributions in India, electoral bonds enable supporters of political parties to remain anonymous, therefore presumably lowering uncontrolled cash flow. Proponents of this financing strategy claim it allows a simpler, more direct approach for donations without violating donor privacy…
The Right to Wear Hijab
The right to wear the hijab has been at the center of law and social debates, especially in light of constitutional rights to religious freedom and equal rights. While people argue about the idea of secularism and how it should be interpreted in different law settings, the principle of equality, which says that no one should be treated differently because of their religion, is at the heart of this argument. The study stresses how hard it is to ba…
Wash to control Covid-19
Background: Preventive public health has been suggested as methods for reducing the transmission of COVID-19. Safety and efficacy of one such public health measure: WASH intervention for COVID-19 has not been systematically reviewed. We undertook a rapid review to assess the effect of WASH intervention in reducing the incidence of COVID-19. Methods: We conducted searches in PubMed, MEDLINE, and EMBASE. We undertook screening of studies in two sta…
Effect of home-based newborn care on neonatal and infant mortality
BACKGROUND: Home-based newborn care has been found to reduce neonatal mortality in rural areas. Study evaluated effectiveness of home-based care delivered by specially recruited newborn care workers- Shishu Rakshak (SR) and existing workers- anganwadi workers (AWW) in reducing neonatal and infant mortality rates. METHODS: This three-arm, community-based, cluster randomised trial was conducted in five districts in India. Intervention package consi…
Incidence, prevalence and associated factors of mother-to-child transmission of HIV, among children exposed to maternal HIV, in Belgaum district, Karnataka, India
The study findings suggest that mother's age above 30 years and breastfeeding beyond 26 weeks is associated with higher rates of HIV transmission from mother to child. It confirms the benefits of providing anti-retrovirals (Nevirapine) in reducing mother to child transmission of HIV. Effective strategies to promote safe infant feeding practices, including avoidance of mixed feeding beyond 26 weeks among HIV infected mothers, is critical to reduce…
Nations within a nation
BACKGROUND: 18% of the world's population lives in India, and many states of India have populations similar to those of large countries. Action to effectively improve population health in India requires availability of reliable and comprehensive state-level estimates of disease burden and risk factors over time. Such comprehensive estimates have not been available so far for all major diseases and risk factors. Thus, we aimed to estimate the dise…
Research protocol for an epidemiological study on estimating disease burden of pediatric HIV in Belgaum district, India
There is a need to strengthen existing pediatric HIV estimation methods in India and other developing countries. We hope that the novel methodology emanating from this study would be applicable for estimating the burden of HIV in other settings and it would be adaptable for estimating the burden of other infectious/chronic diseases. Findings from this study will give future direction to the national program for prevention and control of HIV in In…
Male circumcision for HIV prevention in India
A compelling case for promoting male circumcision (MC) as an intervention for reducing the risk of heterosexually acquired HIV infection was made by dissemination of the results of three studies in Africa. The WHO/UNAIDS recommendation for MC for countries like India, where the epidemic in concentrated in high-risk groups, advocates MC for specific population groups such as men at higher risk for HIV acquisition. A multicentre qualitative study w…
