Women’s lived experiences of the built environment and maternal psychosocial well-being in urban slums and slum rehabilitation colonies
BACKGROUND: Nearly half of India's urban population lives in informal settlements, facing substandard living conditions due to overcrowding, poor infrastructure, and limited access to basic amenities. These conditions critically affect the psychosocial well-being of mothers, yet limited research exists on how the built environment impacts maternal psychosocial health in urban poor settings in India. OBJECTIVE: To explore the influence of housing …
A protocol for estimating health burden posed by early life exposure to ambient fine particulate matter and its heavy metal composition
Background: Pregnant women and children are vulnerable to air pollution-related adverse health effects, especially those residing in low-resource and high-exposure settings like India. However, evidence regarding the effects of early-life exposure to air particulate matter (PM) on childhood growth/developmental trajectory is contradictory; evidence about specific constituents of PM, like heavy metals, is limited. Similarly, there are few Indian c…
Evaluation of health impacts of the improved housing conditions on under-five children in the socioeconomically underprivileged families in central India
Unacceptable housing conditions prevalent in Indian urban slums adversely affect the health of residents. The Government of India initiated the Basic Services to the Urban Poor (BSUP) as a sub-mission under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM), to provide basic services to the urban poor. As per the available scientific literature, the health effects of such improved housing schemes for the poor have not been studied so fa…
Dynamics of Household Waste Segregation Behaviour in Urban Community in Ujjain, India
Waste segregation practices must be socially acceptable, affordable, context-specific, and participatory, which is essential for promoting waste segregation. Therefore, this study explored the urban community members' motivation, opportunity, and household waste segregation ability. We performed a qualitative study in Ujjain city, India. Ten focus group discussions and eight in-depth interviews were conducted with female and male household member…
Health and economic impact of air pollution in the states of India
BACKGROUND: The association of air pollution with multiple adverse health outcomes is becoming well established, but its negative economic impact is less well appreciated. It is important to elucidate this impact for the states of India. METHODS: We estimated exposure to ambient particulate matter pollution, household air pollution, and ambient ozone pollution, and their attributable deaths and disability-adjusted life-years in every state of Ind…
Effects of improved information and volunteer support on segregation of solid waste at the household level in urban settings in Madhya Pradesh, India (I-Miss)
The study is registered prospectively with Indian Council of Medical Research- Clinical Trial Registry of India ( CTRI/2020/03/024278 )
Medical schools in India
This study revealed the mal-distribution of medical schools in India. The problem is further compounded by selective opening of new medical schools within the catchment area of already established medical schools. Considering that medical schools showed a positive influence on public health, further research is needed to guide formulation of rules for medical school establishment in India
A mixed-methods community-based participatory research to explore stakeholder’s perspectives and to quantify the effect of crop residue burning on air and human health in Central India
This manuscript describes the protocol for a novel community-based participatory study to investigate thoroughly the phenomenon of crop residue burning from the perspective of the agricultural community through their active collaboration. The lack of comprehensive evidence regarding the factors responsible for crop residue burning in India underlines the importance of implementing this study protocol to fill in this critical gap in knowledge. Whi…
The impact of air pollution on deaths, disease burden, and life expectancy across the states of India
Background Air pollution is a major planetary health risk, with India estimated to have some of the worst levels globally. To inform action at subnational levels in India, we estimated the exposure to air pollution and its impact on deaths, disease burden, and life expectancy in every state of India in 2017. Methods We estimated exposure to air pollution, including ambient particulate matter pollution, defined as the annual average gridded concen…
Nations within a nation
BACKGROUND: 18% of the world's population lives in India, and many states of India have populations similar to those of large countries. Action to effectively improve population health in India requires availability of reliable and comprehensive state-level estimates of disease burden and risk factors over time. Such comprehensive estimates have not been available so far for all major diseases and risk factors. Thus, we aimed to estimate the dise…
Availability and distribution of safe abortion services in rural areas
BACKGROUND: Unsafe abortion contributes to a significant portion of maternal mortality in India. Access to safe abortion care is known to reduce maternal mortality. Availability and distribution of abortion care facilities can influence women's access to these services, especially in rural areas. OBJECTIVES: To assess the availability and distribution of abortion care at facilities providing childbirth care in three districts of Madhya Pradesh (M…
