  • A Longitudinal Study of Perceptions of the Massachusetts Menthol Ban and Its Impact on Smoking Behaviors among Marginalized Individuals

Open Access•Anna Booras, Renda Soylemez Wiener et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2023

Menthol cigarettes have had a profound adverse effect on public health. On 1 June 2020, Massachusetts became the first state to ban the sale of menthol cigarettes. We explored how perceptions of the ban and smoking behaviors changed over time among a group of 27 individuals who smoked menthol cigarettes at our safety-net hospital. In a convergent mixed methods study, we administered questionnaires and interviews simultaneously at two timepoints: …

  • Impact of Multisystem Health Care on Readmission and Follow-up Among Veterans Hospitalized for Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease

    Seppo T Rinne, A Rani Elwy et al.•ARTICLE•Medical Care•2017•References: 26

BACKGROUND: Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is one of the most common causes of readmission at Veterans Affairs (VA) hospitals. Previous studies demonstrate worse outcomes for veterans with multisystem health care, though the impact of non-VA care on COPD readmissions is unknown. OBJECTIVE: To examine the association of use of non-VA outpatient care with 30-day readmission and 30-day follow-up among veterans admitted to the VA for CO…

  • ‘The thing is not knowing’: Patients' perspectives on surveillance of an indeterminate pulmonary nodule

Open Access•Renda Soylemez Wiener, Michael K Gould et al.•ARTICLE•Health Expectations•2015

BACKGROUND: The hundreds of thousands of patients found to have a potentially malignant pulmonary nodule each year are faced with tremendous uncertainty regarding what the nodule is and how it should be evaluated. OBJECTIVE: To explore patients' responses to the detection and evaluation of a pulmonary nodule. DESIGN: Qualitative study based on four focus-group discussions. We performed inductive analysis using principles of grounded theory to ide…

  • Patient Navigation to Promote Smoking Cessation among Low-Income Primary Care Patients: A Pilot Randomized Controlled Trial

Karen E Lasser, Karey S Kenst et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Ethnicity in Substance…•2013

We conducted a pilot randomized controlled trial to determine the feasibility and acceptability of a patient navigation intervention. Forty-seven smokers from one safety-net hospital were randomized to either a control group, in which they received a smoking cessation brochure and a list of smoking cessation resources, or a navigation group, in which they received the smoking cessation brochure, a list of smoking cessation resources, and patient …
