Open Access•Feleke Tilahun Zewdu, Kassahun Alemu et al.•ARTICLE•PLOS Global Public Health•2026

In Ethiopia, the incidence of cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL) is estimated to range from 20, 000–30, 000 new cases due to Leishmania aethiopica . BACKGROUND: The WHO and Ethiopia's Ministry of Health have developed strategies to expand and integrate services for co-endemic neglected tropical diseases (NTDs) which manifest in the skin. To inform these strategies, we aimed to understand the social, economic and health system context of skin NTD care in Kalu woreda, Amhara region, Ethiopia, where cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL) and leprosy are endemic. METHODS: Between October 2020 and May 2022,…

  • Environmental risk factors associated with community diarrheal disease in Ethiopia

Open Access•Devin LaPolt, Stephen Smith et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2025

Multiple environmental factors for diarrhea were identified. Given the variation in factors by site, strategies for intervention and management should be community-specific. These factors can be managed through improved water treatment, sanitation practices, and educational programs focused on proper hygiene. Efforts to manage these factors can potentially reduce the burden of diarrheal diseases

Open Access•Temam Beshir Raru, Bedasa Taye Merga et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2024

This study revealed that HIV testing and counseling coverage was 62.87% in sub-Saharan Africa. Factors affecting the HIV testing and counseling coverage were age, education, frequency of antenatal care visits, residence area, and living in Rwanda and Mauritania. Therefore, to increase HIV testing and counseling coverage in sub-Saharan Africa, policymakers on maternal health and other stakeholders should work with an integrated approach with other…

Open Access•Gutema Mulatu, Galana Mamo Ayana et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Public Health•2022

Background: Diarrhea remains one of the leading causes of mortality and morbidity, despite the global progression of eradicating the burden of diarrhea-related morbidity and mortality in the past two decades. In Sub-Saharan African (SSA) countries, there is inadequate supply and sanitation of safe water. However, there is a lack of literature that estimates the impact of drinking water and sanitation service on childhood diarrhea in Kersa Demogra…
