  • Prevalence of Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli, Salmonella, and Campylobacter species among diarrheal patients from three major hospitals in Ethiopia

Open Access•Amete Mihret Teshale, Woldaregay Erku Abegaz et al.•ARTICLE•PLOS Global Public Health•2025

Diarrheal illness remains a major global health challenge, causing millions of deaths annually. Non-typhoidal Salmonella (NTS), Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli (STEC), and Campylobacter species (CAMPY) significantly contribute to this burden. Given the limited information on these pathogens in Ethiopia, this study aimed to estimate their prevalence among diarrhea patients in Ethiopia and identify risk factors for infection. A cross-section…

  • Prevalence and factors associated with laboratory-confirmed cases of select enteric infections in three Ethiopian communities, 2018–2022

Open Access•Devin LaPolt, Binyam Moges Azmeraye et al.•ARTICLE•PLOS Global Public Health•2025

Enteric diseases are major contributors to morbidity and mortality worldwide; however, in Ethiopia, information on the prevalence of enteric infections and associated trends is limited. Understanding the epidemiology of enteric infections is necessary for determining disease burden and allocating resources. The objective of this study was to estimate the prevalence of laboratory-confirmed infections associated with select parasitic and bacterial …

  • Environmental risk factors associated with community diarrheal disease in Ethiopia

Open Access•Devin LaPolt, Stephen Smith et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2025

Multiple environmental factors for diarrhea were identified. Given the variation in factors by site, strategies for intervention and management should be community-specific. These factors can be managed through improved water treatment, sanitation practices, and educational programs focused on proper hygiene. Efforts to manage these factors can potentially reduce the burden of diarrheal diseases

  • Dietary, socioeconomic, and maize handling practices associated with aflatoxin and fumonisin exposure among women tortilla makers in 5 departments in Guatemala

Open Access•Ariel V Garsow, Olga Torres et al.•ARTICLE•PLOS Global Public Health•2024

Previous research has demonstrated human exposure to mycotoxins among Guatemalans, with high levels of mycotoxins being found in blood and urine samples as well as in maize for human consumption. Mishandling of crops such as maize during pre- and post-harvest has been associated with mycotoxin contamination. The overarching goal of this study was to identify risk factors for aflatoxin and fumonisin exposure in Guatemala. A cross-sectional survey …

  • Dietary and socioeconomic risk factors for fumonisin exposure among women of reproductive age in 18 municipalities in Guatemala from 2013 to 2014

Open Access•Ariel V Garsow, Olga Torres et al.•ARTICLE•PLOS Global Public Health•2022

Fumonisin exposure is common in populations where maize is a dietary staple, such as in Guatemala, and has been associated with negative health outcomes including neural tube defects. The objective of this study was to estimate fumonisin B 1 (FB 1 ) exposure among Guatemalan reproductive-age women and develop a better understanding of the dietary and sociodemographic risk factors for exposure. A cross-sectional study in 18 municipalities in Guate…

  • Facilitating Evaluation of Hemolytic Uremic Syndrome Long-Term Health Outcomes Through Social Media Support Groups

    Open Access•Aaron Beczkiewicz, Aaron T E Beczkiewicz et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Public Health•2020

Individual burden and cost of hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS)—a medical condition characterized by acute kidney failure—can be substantial when accounting for long-term health outcomes (LTHOs). Because of the low incidence of HUS, evaluation of associated LTHOs is often restricted to physician and outbreak cohorts, both of which may not be representative of all HUS cases. This exploratory study recruited participants from private social media sup…
