  • Socioeconomic inequality for hypertension among reproductive age women aged 15–49 from five Sub-Saharan Africa countries

Open Access•Daniel Bekele Ketema, Desalegn Markos Shifti et al.•ARTICLE•PLOS Global Public Health•2025

Hypertension is a significant public health issue in sub-Saharan Africa, especially among reproductive-aged women. This study aims to assess and decompose socioeconomic inequalities in hypertension across five SSA countries using DHS data. Our study analyzed the latest Demographic and Health Survey data from five SSA countries, including Benin, Cameroon, Ghana, Kenya, and Lesotho. We selected these five SSA countries based on data availability an…

  • Population attributable fractions for modifiable risk factors of neonatal, infant, and under-five mortality in 48 low- and middle-income countries

Open Access•Kedir Yimam Ahmed, Subash Thapa et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Global Health•2025

Background: Identifying the modifiable risk factors for childhood mortality using population-attributable fractions (PAFs) estimates can inform public health planning and resource allocation in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). We estimated PAFs for key population-level modifiable risk factors of neonatal, infant, and under-five mortality in LMICs. Methods: We used the most recent Demographic and Health Survey data sets (2010-22) from 48 …

  • The Covid-19 pandemic and healthcare systems in Africa

Open Access•Gizachew A Tessema, Yohannes Kinfu et al.•ARTICLE•BMJ Global Health•2021

BACKGROUND: The COVID-19 pandemic has overwhelmed health systems in both developed and developing nations alike. Africa has one of the weakest health systems globally, but there is limited evidence on how the region is prepared for, impacted by and responded to the pandemic. METHODS: We conducted a scoping review of PubMed, Scopus, CINAHL to search peer-reviewed articles and Google, Google Scholar and preprint sites for grey literature. The scopi…

  • Mortality rate among HIV-positive children on ART in Northwest Ethiopia

Open Access•Animut Alebel Ayalew, Animut Alebel et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2020

A higher rate of mortality was observed in our study as compared to previous Ethiopian studies. HIV-positive children presenting with anemia, OIs, severe immunodeficiency, advanced disease staging (III and IV), severe stunting, and severe wasting were at higher risk of mortality

  • Incidence and predictors of tuberculosis among HIV-positive adults on antiretroviral therapy at Debre Markos referral hospital, Northwest Ethiopia

Open Access•Belisty Temesgen, Getiye Dejenu Kibret et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2019

The study found that there was a high rate of tuberculosis occurrence as compared to previous studies. Baseline opportunistic infections, being ambulatory and bedridden, advanced disease stage, low hemoglobin level, and not taking Isonized Preventive Therapy were found to be the predictors of tuberculosis. Therefore, early detection and treatment of opportunistic infections like tuberculosis should get a special attention

  • Measuring performance on the Healthcare Access and Quality Index for 195 countries and territories and selected subnational locations

    Open Access•Nancy Fullman, Jamal A Yearwood et al.•ARTICLE•The Lancet•2018

BACKGROUND: A key component of achieving universal health coverage is ensuring that all populations have access to quality health care. Examining where gains have occurred or progress has faltered across and within countries is crucial to guiding decisions and strategies for future improvement. We used the Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study 2016 (GBD 2016) to assess personal health-care access and quality with the Healthc…

  • Healthcare Access and Quality Index based on mortality from causes amenable to personal health care in 195 countries and territories, 1990–2015

    Open Access•Ryan M Barber, Nancy Fullman et al.•ARTICLE•The Lancet•2017

BACKGROUND: National levels of personal health-care access and quality can be approximated by measuring mortality rates from causes that should not be fatal in the presence of effective medical care (ie, amenable mortality). Previous analyses of mortality amenable to health care only focused on high-income countries and faced several methodological challenges. In the present analysis, we use the highly standardised cause of death and risk factor …

  • Global, regional, and national under-5 mortality, adult mortality, age-specific mortality, and life expectancy, 1970–2016

Open Access•Haidong Wang, Amanuel Alemu Abajobir et al.•ARTICLE•The Lancet•2017

BACKGROUND: Detailed assessments of mortality patterns, particularly age-specific mortality, represent a crucial input that enables health systems to target interventions to specific populations. Understanding how all-cause mortality has changed with respect to development status can identify exemplars for best practice. To accomplish this, the Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study 2016 (GBD 2016) estimated age-specific and …
