  • Association Between Decision-Making Styles, Personality Traits, and Socio-Demographic Factors in Women Choosing Voluntary Pregnancy Termination: A Cross-Sectional Study

Open Access•Ludovica Lorusso, Nicola Bartolomeo et al.•ARTICLE•European Journal of Investigation…•2025

Personality traits, decision-making styles, and socio-demographic information help understand the characteristics of women requesting voluntary termination of pregnancy (VTP) and monitor the timing and quality of this service However, our current data do not allow for an in-depth exploration of additional, less evident factors that might influence the decision. The aim was to characterise a sample of women requesting VTP in terms of socio-demogra…

  • No Excess of Mortality from Lung Cancer during the Covid-19 Pandemic in an Area at Environmental Risk: Results of an Explorative Analysis

Open Access•Francesco Addabbo, Massimo Giotta et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2023

This study shows that there was no excess mortality from lung cancer as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic in the province of Taranto. The strategies applied by the local oncological services during the pandemic were probably effective in minimizing the possible interruption of cancer treatment. Strategies for accessing care in future health emergencies should take into account the results of continuous monitoring of disease trends

  • Application of a Decision Tree Model to Predict the Outcome of Non-Intensive Inpatients Hospitalized for Covid-19

Open Access•Massimo Giotta, Paolo Trerotoli et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2022

Many studies have identified predictors of outcomes for inpatients with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), especially in intensive care units. However, most retrospective studies applied regression methods to evaluate the risk of death or worsening health. Recently, new studies have based their conclusions on retrospective studies by applying machine learning methods. This study applied a machine learning method based on decision tree methods t…

  • Tendency in Pulmonary Aspergillosis Investigation during the Covid-19 Era: What Is Changing

Open Access•Giuseppina Caggiano, Francesca Apollonio et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2022

Aspergillosis is a disease caused by Aspergillus , and invasive pulmonary aspergillosis (IPA) is the most common invasive fungal infection leading to death in severely immuno-compromised patients. The literature reports Aspergillus co-infections in patients with COVID-19 (CAPA). Diagnosing CAPA clinically is complex since the symptoms are non-specific, and performing a bronchoscopy is difficult. Generally, the microbiological diagnosis of aspergi…

  • Impact of Socioeconomic Deprivation on the Local Spread of Covid-19 Cases Mediated by the Effect of Seasons and Restrictive Public Health Measures: A Retrospective Observational Study in Apulia Region…

Open Access•Nicola Bartolomeo, Massimo Giotta et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2022

The aim of this study was to investigate the spatiotemporal association between socioeconomic deprivation and the incidence of COVID-19 and how this association changes through the seasons due to the existence of restrictive public health measures. A retrospective observational study was conducted among COVID-19 cases that occurred in the Apulia region from 29 February 2020 to 31 December 2021, dividing the period into four phases with different …

  • Sex Differences in Autism Spectrum Disorder: Focus on High Functioning Children and Adolescents

Open Access•Concetta de Giambattista, Patrizia Ventura et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Psychiatry•2021

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) has historically been studied, known, and diagnosed in males. Females tend to remain unidentified, especially those with average intelligence abilities. This sex/gender difference might be partially explained by biological risk factors, but it is probably also bound to methodological issues. The present study aims to examine phenotypic characteristics (cognitive, emotive, socio-communicative, and academic) of a grou…

  • In-Hospital Mortality in Non-Covid-19-Related Diseases before and during the Pandemic: A Regional Retrospective Study

Open Access•Nicola Bartolomeo, Massimo Giotta et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2021

Italy was one of the nations most affected by SARS-CoV-2. During the pandemic period, the national government approved some restrictions to reduce diffusion of the virus. We aimed to evaluate changes in in-hospital mortality and its possible relation with patient comorbidities and different restrictive public health measures adopted during the 2020 pandemic period. We analyzed the hospital discharge records of inpatients from public and private h…

  • Food Hygiene Surveillance in Italy: Is Food Ice a Public Health Risk

Open Access•Giuseppina Caggiano, Vincenzo Marcotrigiano et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2020

Food ice is used as an ingredient or as a coolant in drinks and in the storage of food, especially fishery products. Studies show that ice can be polluted both by chemical substances and by bacteria and fungi. In particular, the presence of fungi in these food matrices has acquired an important role in Public Health, as it can represent a risk factor for fungal complications in immunocompromised subjects. In the present study we evaluated the hyg…

  • Evaluation of an Alimentary Education Intervention on School Canteen Waste at a Primary School in Bari, Italy

Open Access•Nicoletta Favuzzi, Paolo Trerotoli et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2020

The "Love Food, Not Waste" project was conducted to train students on good food choices and evaluate food waste in school canteens. Teachers, parents and students were surveyed before and after training. Weights of both the served and wasted food were recorded for one week both before the educational intervention in February 2019 and after the educational intervention in March 2019, using the same menu. Students completed a food satisfaction ques…

  • A Pilot Survey on Hygienic–Sanitary Characteristics of Ready-To-Eat Sauces and Pesto

Open Access•Giuseppina Caggiano, Giusy Diella et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2020

In recent years, the chaotic habits of modern life have favored the consumption of quickly prepared meals, using ready-to-eat (RTE) foods and condiments. The aim of this study was to establish the microbiological safety of RTE sauces and pesto from markets analyzed at different stages of shelf life. In the bacterial investigation, all samples were shown to be acceptable, although differences were observed concerning shelf life times. On the other…

  • Legionella Detection in Water Networks as per ISO 11731: 2017: Can Different Filter Pore Sizes and Direct Placement on Culture Media Influence Laboratory Results

Open Access•Osvalda De Giglio, Giusy Diella et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2020

Determination of Legionella concentrations in water networks is useful for predicting legionellosis risks. The standard culture technique using concentration with membranes filters is the most commonly used method for environmental surveillance of Legionella . The aim of this study was to verify whether filtration with different filter pore sizes (0.2 and 0.45 μm) according to (ISO) 11731:2017, followed by directly placing them on culture media, …

  • Availability of Real-World Data in Italy: A Tool to Navigate Regional Healthcare Utilization Databases

Open Access•Edlira Skrami, Flavia Carle et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2019

The purpose of the study was to map and describe the healthcare utilization databases (HUDs) available in Italy's 19 regions and two autonomous provinces and develop a tool to navigate through them. A census of the HUDs covering the population of a single region/province and recording local-level data was conducted between January 2014 and October 2016. The characteristics of each HUD regarding the start year, data type and completeness, data man…

  • Evaluation of Air Contamination in Orthopaedic Operating Theatres in Hospitals in Southern Italy: The Impact Project

Open Access•Maria Teresa Montagna, Serafina Rutigliano et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2019

Postoperative infections are a concern, especially in total knee and total hip arthroplasty. We evaluated the air quality in orthopaedic operating theatres in southeastern Italy to determine the level of bacterial contamination as a risk factor for postoperative infection. Thirty-five hospitals with operating theatres focused on total knee and total hip arthroplasty participated. We sampled the air passively and actively before surgeries began fo…

  • Prevalence of thyroid nodules in an occupationally radiation exposed group: A cross sectional study in an area with mild iodine deficiency

Open Access•Paolo Trerotoli, Anna Ciampolillo et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2005

In our study, occupational exposure to radiation combined with mild iodine deficiency did not increase the risk of developing thyroid nodules. The statistically significant higher prevalence of thyroid nodules in the non exposed group could be explained by the high percentage (22%) of people with a familial history of, and hence a greater predisposition to, thyroid disease. The endemic condition of mild iodine deficiency, demonstrated in other st…
