Global incidence, prevalence, years lived with disability (YLDs), disability-adjusted life-years (Dalys), and healthy life expectancy (Hale) for 371 diseases and injuries in 204 countries and territor…
BACKGROUND: Detailed, comprehensive, and timely reporting on population health by underlying causes of disability and premature death is crucial to understanding and responding to complex patterns of disease and injury burden over time and across age groups, sexes, and locations. The availability of disease burden estimates can promote evidence-based interventions that enable public health researchers, policy makers, and other professionals to im…
Epidemiological pattern of Covid-19 and its association with periodontal health in an urban Indian cohort
Background Studies have highlighted a possible influence of gingival and periodontal disease (PD) on COVID-19 risk and severity. However, the evidence is based on hospital-based studies and community-level data are sparse. Objectives We described the epidemiological pattern of SARS-CoV-2 infection in Delhi and evaluated the associations of gingival and PD with incident COVID-19 disease in a regionally representative urban Indian population. Metho…
Observers use gesture to disambiguate contrastive expressions of preference
We present two studies exploring how participants respond when a speaker contrasts two ideas, then expresses an ambiguous preference towards one of them. Study 1 showed that, when reading a speaker’s preference as text, participants tended to choose whatever was said last as matching the speaker’s preference, reflecting the recent-mention bias of anaphora resolution. In Study 2, we asked whether this pattern changed for audio versions of our stim…
A comparative study of retention of cement retained implant prosthesis cemented with different luting cements
Purpose: The study was conducted to evaluate the retentiveness of specifically formulated implant cements and compare its retentiveness with a commonly used noneugenol zinc oxide luting cement and also to assess the influence of abutment height on the retentiveness of these cements. Materials and Methods: A master stainless steel mold was used to mount snappy abutment-implant analog complex in acrylic resin. A total of six stock abutments (Osstem…
Dentin hypersentivity
Dentine hypersensitivity (DHS) is a widespread painful dental problem that is characterized by short sharp pain arising from exposed dentin in response to several different stimuli. This accepted definition, indicates the need to consider a differential diagnosis to rule out other causes of dental pain before the diagnosis of dentin hypersensitivity is made. The management strategy of this dental problem required a good understanding of the compl…
Magnification in endodontics
Over the past few decades, technological advances in endodontics have taken quantum leaps from conventional hand files to rotary system and from direct vision to magnification. Magnification helps the user not only to see more, but to see well. The application of magnification devices in endodontics is mainly meant for visual enhancement and improved ergonomics. This is crucial especially when long hours are spent in a narrow operating space to t…
Recent advances in dental composites
Composite resins are widely used aesthetic materials in restorative dentistry. These materials were introduced to overcome the inherent shortcomings of amalgam restorative materials. Dental amalgams are unesthetic and toxic. Earlier composites lack in mechanical properties to withstand the masticatory forces. Various filler particles have been added to composite resins to improve their physical and mechanical properties. Filled composite resins e…
A study on knowledge, attitude, and practice towards premarital carrier screening among adults attending primary healthcare centers in a region in Oman
Despite the relatively high level of knowledge, about one third of the participants were still reluctant to carry out premarital testing. Such attitude calls for immediate need for community-based campaigns to encourage the public to do premarital testing
